"A member of the Church of England, Parkes was ordained in 1926 and from 1928 to 1934 was study secretary of the International Student Service in Geneva. Actively aware of the anti-Semitism prevalent in the Central and Eastern European universities, he wrote his earliest book, The Jew and His Neighbour (1930, 1938) . He then embarked on what was planned as a comprehensive history of anti-Semitism, the chief responsibility for which he saw in the policy of the Christian Church. He wrote a long series of other works on anti-Semitism, the origins of Christianity, the history of Palestine, etc, in all of which he demonstrated a strong sympathy with the Jewish people and appreciation of Judaism as a religious system. Parkes collaborated with many Jewish organizations and was president of the Jewish Historical Society of England (1949-51) . His important private library on Jewish history and Jewish-Gentile relations, which he collected at his home in Barley (near Cambridge) and was incorporated in 1956 as a center for the study of relations between the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds, was given by Parkes to the University of Southampton, where the University established a research fellowship for the study of the relations of Jewish and non-Jewish communities. First edition. SUBJECT (S) : Manuscripts, Hebrew – Illinois – Chicago – catalogs; Manuscripts, Hebrew – facsimiles; manuscripts, Judeo-Arabic – Illinois – Chicago – catalogs; manuscripts, Judeo-Arabic – facsimiles; Jews – Yemen (Republic) – intellectual life; Spertus College of Judaica – catalogs. Born in Chicago, Golb (b. 1928) is an historian and a paleographer; he earned his Ph. D. At Johns Hopkins in 1954. “His discoveries have included the identification of Obadiah the Proselyte as author of the oldest Hebrew musical manuscript, the recovery of a Genizah document describing a prominent European convert to Judaism at the beginning of the 11th century; the discovery and decipherment of the earliest extant legal record of the Jews of Sicily and of an original autograph manuscript of Khazarian Jews of Kiev; and the identification of a Hebrew document dealing with the First Crusade. His hypothesis of the existence of a center of Jewish culture in medieval Rouen and of an important yeshivah there has recently been supported by archeological discoveries in that city. In a recent study he has concluded that the Dead Sea Scrolls originated not with a sect at Qumran but in Jerusalem, being hidden away by the Jews at the time of the First Revolt against Rome. ” (EJ) Has dust jacket.
