derondo.jpg (1503578 bytes) C. • Eliot, George. DANIEL DERONDA. COMPLETE IN 4 VOLUMES. Publication: London, Edinburgh, William Blackwood and Sons, 1876. First bound edition. Four volumes in two books. Cloth covered in marbled paper and quarter-bound with leather, 8vo, 364 pages. In this enduring Victorian classic written in 1876, two stories weave in and out of each other: The first is about Gwendolen, one of Eliot's finest creations, who grows from a self-centered young beauty to a thoughtful adult with an expanded vision of the world around her. The second is about Daniel Deronda, adopted son of an aristocratic Englishman who becomes fascinated with Jewish traditions when he meets an ailing Jewish philosopher named Mordecai and his sensitive sister, Mirah. Providentially, Daniel then discovers that he himself is Jewish. Eliot's (Middlemarch, Audio Reviews, LJ 3/15/95) tender portrait of Mordecai is considered by some critics to be one of the most sympathetic treatments of a Jewish character in Victorian literature, and is notable for its exposure of Victorian Antisemitism. Back cover scuffed, some wear to corners and spine. Very Good condition. (BR-1) (ID #14463) $650.00.

The emancipation of the jews2.jpg (216131 bytes) D. • Henriques, H. S. Q. THE EMANCIPATION OF THE JEWS IN ENGLAND. Unpublished, 1910? Half leather; 4to. 62 pages. Beautifully bound, with marbled boards, morocco leather title band, gilt lettering. Inside is a copy of a typed manuscript which bears marks of having been previously clipped or fastened together in the upper left corner. "Proof" "Private" is written in the margin at the top of the manuscript. A previous owner's note laid in reads "This is a proof copy of a book intended for publication. It bears no author's name or other identification but I am certain the author is H. S. Q. Henriques, M. A. , B. C. I. , a barrister and author. Henriques is the author of what appears to be an earlier work on the same subject, viz. , 'The Return of the Jews to England, ' which is extensively quoted in this proof copy and the style of the two works is identical and the authorities quoted are the same. 'The Return' was published in 1905 having previously appeared as an article in the Jewish Quarterly Review. This was followed (inter alia) by 'The Jews and the English Law' and then, in 1909, "Jewish Marriages and the English Law" which had appeared in the Jewish Quarterly Review in April 1908. This last-mentioned work contains a list of works 'By the same author' but this does not refer to other work of which this is a proof copy, viz. 'The Emancipation of the Jews in England' so it must be dated after 1909. I have been unable to trace an essay of this title by Henriques in the Jewish Quarterly Review and it would seem it was never published there or indeed elsewhere. " This is, of course, also the (partial) title of a 1982 work by Abraham Gilam. OCLC lists no copies worldwide. Manuscript shows evidence of having been folded lengthwise before binding. Editing marks in pencil throughout. First page darkened; others slightly so. Corners and edges of boards worn, as well as top and bottom of spine; but binding very tight. Good condition. (BR-3) (ID #14530) $3,000.00.

Isaac Youth.jpg (251550 bytes)E. • Rosenberg, Isaac. YOUTH. London, I. Narodiczky, 1915. Original paper wrappers handsomely bound in newer marbled cloth and quarter-bound with leather, 8vo, 18 pages. Very Good condition. (BR-1) (ID #14443) $600.00.

Pen and ink Manuscript, in a clear hand, in English. Interesting WW II era original manuscript minutes ledger from this small East London Ashkenazic shul, also known as the Spital Square Pollava Synagogue. Then in the midst of war-time belt tightening, the scribe has recorded in greatest detail here the heated meetings of the synagogue board, where they debate, among other questions, the merits of merging with various other synagogues (at one point consider a partial merger with the Nelson St. Synagogue—a Sephardic congregation—noting that they "can recite their prayers in their own way…); who should be given money from the shul’s coffers; how to deal with members of the synagogue spreading "nasty roumors" about others in the congregation; the proper way to deal with members who are davening incorrectly (some say they should be evicted), or using vulgar language; etc, etc. It’s nice to know some things don’t change…. Very Good Condition. Unique and Very Attractive. $1000.00

Frontispiece portrait of David Sassoon. Pictorial jacket. The author traces the Sassoon clan from David (b. 1792) in Bombay 1832 to Sir Victor (d. 1961) and all the prominent Sassoons [including Sir Philip and Siegfried] between. Few dynasties have experienced more dramatic changes of fortune than the Sassoons, long known as "the Rothschilds of the East. " After centuries as bankers to successive Ottoman rulers and leading citizens in Baghdad, the year 1829 saw the clan suddenly faced with extinction -- and the young David Sassoon forced to flee his ancestral home. In a single generation against the turbulent background of the Opium Wars, he founded a spectacular trading empire based in Bombay with branches straddling Europe and the Far East. Even more remarkable than its trading coups was the clan's dazzling social progress. The first Sassoon to wear Western dress arrived in England in 1858. Within a few years the family boasted two baronetcies and was sending its sons to Eton and Oxford. The Shah of Persia and, later, King Edward VII were to be guests in the Sassoon homes and shooting lodges. Sir Philip Sassoon, millionaire host, politician and aesthete, was private secretary to Field Marshall Haig and Lloyd George, and friend of the Duke of Windsor, Chaplin and Lawrence of Arabia. His cousin, Siegfried, is the famous war poet. Lehmann 246. SUBJECT(S): Sassoon family. Bibliography: p. [292]-295. Very good condition in good dust jacket. (BR-4) (ID #15308) $30.00.
