ABRAHAM J. FELDMAN

Abraham J. Feldman (1893-1977) was born in Kiev, Ukraine and came to the US in 1906 at age 11. He attended the Baron De Hirsch School of the Educational Alliance, where he helped to write a Yiddish-English dictionary. In 1918, he was ordained at HUC, where he had previously received his B.H.L. And although he was a Zionist among a largely anti-Zionist faculty, he was awarded an honorary D.D. from HUC in 1944.

After finishing his studies at HUC, Feldman served as fellowship assistant at the Free Synagogue of Flushing, New York (1918-1919), a satellite branch of Stephen S. Wise's Free Synagogue in New York City. A year later, Feldman went on to the Congregation Children of Israel in Athens, GA (1919-1920); and then the Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Philadelphia (1920-1925). In Philadelphia, though originally hired to be Joseph Krauskopf's assistant, he soon took over full Rabbinic duties following the elder Rabbi's decline in Health that same year. Feldman penned a short biography of his predecessor at Keneseth Israel (printed in the 1924 American Jewish Year Book). In 1925 Feldman was elected rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford, CT, where he remained until retiring in 1977.

While at Beth Israel, Feldman was a leader not only in Connecticut Jewish life, but also in ecumenical and secular organizations. In 1929 he was a co-founder of the Connecticut Jewish Ledger, of which he remained editor until 1977.

At the national level, Feldman was a member of the Board of Governors at HUC, a member of the executive council of the UAHC, and President of the CCAR (1947-1949). He was on the publications committee of JPS, the National Committee of the Jewish Book Council of America, and served as national president of the Synagogue Council of America. As a member of the UAHC committee on ceremonies, Feldman design the atarah, which many Reform rabbis wear in place of a Tallit.

A prolific writer, Feldman penned more than 26 books, pamphlets, and articles.

The items below reflect his stature in American Jewish life, particularly in the Reform Movement; his history at HUC, Keneseth Israel in Philadelphia, and Beth Israel in West Hartford; and his embrace of Zionism. Many are quite scarce with 3, 2, 1, or even no copies listed on OCLC. All items are 1st editions unless otherwise noted.
