HOLOCAUST ART & SURVIVORS AND VICTIMS LISTS

1. Brecht, Bertolt. Lithographs by Gershon Knispel. KINDERKREUZZUG. Tel-Aviv, United Artists, 1967. Cloth, oblong 8vo, 62 single-sided pages. Comprised of the anti-fascist Brecht's poem "Kinderkreuzzug" with 24 lithographs of childhood victims of Nazism by Gershon Knispel. Originally issued in Portuguese in 1962, then in 1966 with Hebrew text. This is the first German-Hebrew edition. It was also later (1973 & 74) issued in English as "Children's crusade: a ballad for children's voices and orchestra," but with only 12 plates. Even this 1974 edition remains scarce; OCLC lists only 10 libraries worldwide with it in their collections, no copies of any edition in any language appear to be offered for sale anywhere on the net. Light bowing to boards & a bit of spotting to endpapers, Good+ Condition. $200.00

2. Domanski, Jerzy, editor. OSWIECIM MALARSTWO RZEZBA GRAFIKA. Krakow: Wydawnictwo Artystysznograficzne, 1959. Cloth, oblong 8vo, 76 pages. Printed on heavy, glossy paper. 64 powerful catalogued paintings posters, and sketches by various artists, with listings in Polish & French, all commemorating the horror of Auschwitz. Accompanying text in Polish. No copy listed at Harvard (no other library catalogs checked). No copies appear to be offered for sale anywhere on the net. Binding shaken, some signatures of pages starting to come loose, all artwork is in very good condition, Good Condition overall. $175.00

3. IN MEMORIAM NEDERLANDSE OORLOGSSLACHTOFFERS. Volume 34 only. Cloth, oblong 4to, 152 pages. No Place (The Hague?), No Publisher (Oorlogsgravenstichting?), No Date (1980s?). This volume apparently complete as a listing of the over 2500 Dutch citizens who were murdered by the Nazis at Neuengamme Concentration Camp or associated camps and prisons in the Hamburg region (Kdo Dalum, Kdo Ladelund, etc.) Alphabetical listings by name, with date and place of birth and date and place of death. Near Fine Condition. No copy listed at Harvard (no other library catalogs checked). No copies appear to be offered for sale anywhere on the net. $500.00

4. IN MEMORIAM NEDERLANDSE OORLOGSSLACHTOFFERS. Volume 41 only. Cloth, oblong 4to, 240 pages. No Place (The Hague?), No Publisher (Oorlogsgravenstichting?), No Date (ca. 1950?). Covering names beginning with L-Z, this volume apparently comprising half of the listings of Dutch citizens (civilians?) who were murdered by the Japanese in the Far East during WW II. It includes over 3900 names in alphabetical order, and includes date and place of birth and date and place of death. Some overall wear, but a solid, good copy. No copy listed at Harvard (no other library catalogs checked). No copies appear to be offered for sale anywhere on the net. $350.00

5. Kiedrzynska, Wanda. RAVENSBRÜCK, KOBIECY OBOZ KONCENTRACYJNY. No Place (Warsaw) Ksiazka i Wiedza, 1965. Cloth, 8vo, 489 pages. 20 cm. Does includes several photos & drawings, but what really makes this book important is its over 150 pages of appendices which list deportations (broken down by prisoners numbers, crimes, nationalities, etc.) and names of approximately 4000 Ravensbrück prisoners, organized alphabetically by region or town (e.g. "Lublin") & date of deportation. In the section listing women deported from Pawiak Prison in Warsaw, a previous owner, presumably a survivor herself, has added names in the margin which were left out by Kiedrzynska. Also includes an 8-page bibliography (just on Ravensbrück!) and a 9-page summary in English (also one in Russian), and a 16-page names index. This book has sustained some heavy use, it is a solid but worn copy, with a replacement title page and some professional internal binding repairs. A scarce work, with Harvard listing only the 1961 edition of 379 pages (no other library catalogs checked). No copies appear to be offered for sale anywhere on the net. $300.00

An English-language edition was apparently published under the title of "The Agony, struggle and destruction of the Jews in Poland, 1939-1945," though OCLC lists only 4 libraries worldwide which list a copy (Yale, Clark, Belmont Abbey College, & UNC-Charlotte). And no copies in either language appear to be offered for sale anywhere on the net. A massive work with photo after damning photo documenting the destruction of the Polish Jews. HUNGARIAN HOLOCAUST DOCUMENTS--Typescript lists of camp survivors. All are unique, original documents, and come from the family of a former concentration camp survivor who had compiled the lists during the weeks following liberation.

10. (Allendorf-Lager) DETAILED LIST OF 1000 HUNGARIAN JEWISH WOMEN, FORMER PRISONERS OF ALLENDORF-LAGER, currently in Homberg-Ziegenhain and Fritzlar region. Original blue carbon-copy, typed on thin paper, with place of origin and date of birth stated for each survivor. 17 pages, with about 60 names on each page. Due to the poor quality of the paper some parts are slightly worn, but most names and information is clearly legible. (#H213) $1,000.00

11. (Bergen-Belsen) DETAILED LIST OF OVER 400 HUNGARIAN JEWISH WOMEN, FORMER PRISONERS OF BERGEN-BELSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP. The list indicates name, place of origin and date of birth. 12. (Kaunicz concentration camp) DETAILED LIST OF OVER 400 HUNGARIAN JEWISH WOMEN, FORMER PRISONERS KAUNICZ CONCENTRATION CAMP. List indicates place of origin and date of birth." Typed original on thin paper. 9 pages. Typed original on thin paper. 5 pages. 14. VISSZAVÁNDORLÓK NÉVSORA. "List of returnees". Detailed typed list of names of liberated, returning Hungarian Jewish prisoners of German concentration camps in the region of Homberg, with their place of origin and date of birth stated. Oddly, this has been typed up on letterhead of the Homberg Hitler-Youth--perhaps the only paper that was available in the recently liberated former offices of the Hitler-Jugend, where, presumably, there was a typewriter available for this list to be created. The list is divided by originating concentration camps:

* Feldafing 11 pages

* Garmisch-Partenkirchen 3 pages

* Laudsberg 2 pages

* München 2 pages

And includes 40-50 names on each page--over 700 names in total. (#H212). $1000.00

Broken run of 20 volumes: 1966 (reproduction copy, bound), 1969, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 (reproduction copy, bound), 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 (reproduction copy, bound), 1988, 1989, & 1990. All are in original paper covers, except for copies, which are bound in cloth. In his article on the journal entitled, "The Thesaurus of Hell: Twenty-Six Years of the Periodical Przeglad Lekarski-Oswiecim," Wolf Oschlies noted that "The journal Przeglad Lekarski (Medical Review) first appeared in Cracow in 1862 and has been published since then with few interruptions; throughout this period it was the professional journal most widely read by Polish physicians. Since 1961, the journal has each year added to its first issue a special supplement dealing with the experiences and consequences of the Nazi concentration camps, Przeglad Lekarski-Oswiecim....Each issue of Przeglad Lekarski-Oswiecini comprises approximately 250 pages arranged around three thematic foci: (1) medical, psychological, and sociological research; (2) forensic investigations; and (3) historical documentation. Each issue is introduced with a comprehensive foreword by Josef Bogusz, who speaks for the supplement's independent editorial board. Bogusz, the cloyen of the Polish medical profession, comments with sovereign tranquillity upon events in Poland and abroad that touch upon the subject covered by Przeglad Lekarski. Thus, in recent issues he cited with approval the speech by the West German President Richard von Weizsacker concerning German responsibility for the crimes of the Nazi era, and denounced the film Shoah as an inaccurate representation of Polish behavior....Przeglad Lekarski holds a special methodological position concerning the concentration camp syndrome. Unlike memoirs, which represent the recollection of one individual, and the work of doctors and psychiatrists who always deal with only one patient, this journal has presented studies yielding comprehensive and representative results. That is the achievement of the particular methods of Przeglad Lekarski....As early as 1977, the journal had asked survivors for an answer to the question "Why I survived," and in 1985 published several studies of survivors and their descendants. The result could be summarized only in a general hypothesis: anyone who survived the concentration camp owed a debt of gratitude, not to his physical strength, but to his psychological makeup that equipped him with a special will toward survival. These characteristics have carried over to subsequent generations. When we have not eaten for a few hours, we consider ourselves "hungry" and look for food. But what does this mean? Are we like those concentration camp survivors who, even four decades after the end of the war, cannot be sent shopping by their relatives because they unfailingly and compulsively buy more bread than they and the whole family can eat? Anyone who ever had contact with concentration camp survivors is familiar enough with such instances, all of which compel a single question: What must these people have suffered if, so long after their liberation, they are still under such compulsion?....Many Przeglad Lekarski topics may lead a confused reader to ask whether the editors had run out of ideas and therefore had to resort to such topics as "Stimulants in the Auschwitz Camp." Such a conclusion would be unjust, however, as a reading of that particular essay in the 1975 issue makes clear. Of course there were numerous prisoners who were indifferent about getting along without stimulants. Others suffered all the more from the lack, and there were also some who first experienced the taste of tobacco in the concentration camp. Basically the situation was as follows. Alcohol was categorically forbidden in the concentration camp. Only men were permitted to smoke at all-out- side the blocks before the morning and evening roll calls, but never in the presence of the SS or during work. These regulations were frequently broken, never without risk. The study is full of statements about how a forbidden puff of a cigarette led to punishments that many did not survive. Other reports tell of how smokers themselves shortened their chances of survival by exchanging their meager food for cigarettes. On the other hand, many recall that they had started to smoke only to drown out the nagging feeling of hunger. And anyone who reads all these reports quickly notices that a seemingly unimportant topic such as this, like much of what the journal has published, also becomes a testament to the tortures of incarceration in a concentration camp. Hardly any topic is missing in Przeglad Lekarski, as there are even detailed studies about camp money, postal service between the camps, and similar matters. Nonetheless, there is one great omission: the topic of language used within the camp. How did nationals from the approximately 35 countries that were represented in each concentration camp communicate with each other? What was the effect of the dominating role of German on the language conventions of the camp? Was there a jargon that was typical for the concentration camp? Were camouflage elements used in speaking?....Starting in 1978, and consistently since 1984, Przeglad Lekarski has published segments of an Auschwitz dictionary (Slowifik oswiecimski)...."
