Original Paper Wrappers, Large 8vo. For the first 2 years, the Biuletyn was issued Semmiannually; From that point, until 2000, when it concluded with Nr. 196, it was published quarterly. It was then succeeded by the Kwartalnik historii zydów.All issues are, of course, primarily in Polish, with summaries in English, French, and Russian during the first 2 years; and with summaries only in English from 1955-1971; and then in English and Yiddish from 1972-2000. (The Biuletyn was also published in a Yiddish edition from Nr. 1 through Nr. 76 (in 1970). "The Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw was an "institution devoted to the study of Polish Jewish history. As soon as World War II ended and some forms of organized Jewish life were resumed in Poland, a series of historical societies sprang up in Lodz, Cracow, Bialystok, and Lublin. Their main task was to preserve a record of the gruesome events of the Holocaust by research, documentation, collection of evidence, and publications. For the coordination of their activities, the Central Historical Commission was established in Warsaw in 1948, followed by the establishment of the Jewish Historical Institute. The Institute provided a framework for researchers and writers and helped them publish their works. It collected materials and organized proper archives, a museum, and a library; established contact with Jewish organizations abroad and with the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN); and issued a quarterly publication, Biuletyn pydowskiego Instytutu Historycznego (1950- ), in Polish (with summaries in English) and an annual in Yiddish, Bleter far Geshikhte (1948- ). These activities were financed mainly by a grant from the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), and by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. In 1968 the official anti-Semitic campaign in Poland induced almost all the workers of the Institute to emigrate, and the publication of the quarterly was impaired. Among the major works inspired by the Institute were: Di Geshikhte fun Yidn in Poyln (History of the Jews in Poland, 1951), by Bernard (Berl) Mark, of which only one volume (until the 17th century) appeared in print (Yiddish), and Hitlerowska Polityka Eksterminacji pyd\w ("Hitler's Policies of Extermination," 1953) by A. Eisenbach. The number of other publications runs into several scores, dealing mainly with the Holocaust period" (EJ). Descriptor: Jews -- Poland -- Periodicals. Also includes over 70 photos, most of which are used to demonstrate racial characteristics. Author lays out plans for post-war (forced? ) migration of Central Europeans to various parts which, if followed, will limit the psychological and political strength of German militarism: "The non-German Slav name of Prussia will no longer be applicable to the state of Brandenburg in which Berlin lies, once all Prussian territory goes back to the Slavs, to whom it historically belongs. Psychologically it will be hard to keep alive an ardent Prussian attitude of mind when Prussia is no longer in Germany. Cloth, 8vo, 12, 24 pages. 22 cm. In Hebrew. "ketuvah bi-sefat Ashkenaz bi-yede Yisra'el Lobl ; ve-ne`etkah le-`Ivrit bi-yede Efrayim Dainard ; ve-nilvah eleha be-sofah kitsur mi-sefer Zot Torat ha-kana'ut. " Loebel was a "preacher and dayyan, [and] opponent of Hasidism. He was probably born in Slutsk, or at least lived there in his childhood, was preacher in Mogilev, and in 1787 was appointed permanent preacher and dayyan in Novogrudok. While he was still in Mogilev, his opposition to the Hasidim grew as a result of his brother's joining their ranks. When Elijah b. Solomon, the Vilna Gaon, issued a proclamation against the Hasidim in 1797, Loebel obtained from R. Saadiah, an emissary and disciple of the Gaon, a letter of recommendation authorizing him to preach against the sect wherever possible, and approval for the publication of his books. He was likewise granted the approval of the parnasim of the Slutsk community, and at the gathering of the leaders of the Lithuanian communities at Zelva he was evidently authorized to travel throughout Poland and beyond, in order to disseminate anti-hasidic propaganda. His two booklets against Hasidism, Sefer Vikku'ah and Kivrot ha-Ta'avah, were printed in Warsaw in 1798; the latter is no longer extant. In his preachings in the communities of east Galicia, Loebel conducted anti-hasidic propaganda. According to his own testimony, Loebel was granted an audience with Emperor Francis II at Vienna in early 1799, as a result of which public meetings of Hasidim were prohibited in all the provinces of Poland which had then come under Austrian rule. There is, however, no historical evidence for this" (Esther (Zweig) Liebes in EJ) . Deinard, (1846-1930) , was an important "bibliographer and Hebrew author. Born in Sasmakken, Latvia, Deinard wandered in his youth, collecting ancient manuscripts and books in many countries, and then established a bookshop in Odessa. In 1897 he tried unsuccessfully to found an agricultural settlement in Nevada (U. S. ) . An active Zionist, he settled in Palestine in 1913 where he investigated the possibilities of Jewish settlement. After being expelled by the Turks in 1916 he returned to the United States and continued his bibliographical work...He laid the foundations of the Hebrew book and manuscript collections of the Library of Congress with the financial aid of Jacob Schiff. A violent polemicist on many controversial subjects, he attacked Reform Judaism, Hasidism, Christianity, and Karaism. Deinard was a prolific Hebrew writer, producing more than 50 books and pamphlets often signed with his pseudonym, Adir. He also published several short-lived Hebrew and Yiddish journals, among them Ha-Le'ummi, one of the earliest Hebrew periodicals in America. Cohen, Fiorello La Guardia, Arthur Garfield Hays, Louis Hollander, Sidney Hook, Max Lerner, Gunnar Myrdal, etc. Some of the articles from the entire series include: The Underground Struggle; Polish-Jewish Underground Collaboration; German Invaders and Polish Intellectuals; Working people of Poland fights [sic] anti-semitism; Partial destruction of the Ghetto wall; Discussion of Polish Antisemitism; Polish Slavery under Hitler's "New Order"; News from the Ghetto; The Undergroudn Jewish paper against Nazi orders; In a Nazi Concentration Camp [survivor tells about Mauthausen & Dachau]; Jewish Ghetto; The professors of Cracow University in a Concentration Camp; New Criminal Code for Poles & Jews; The Fate of the Polish Intelligensia; The Attitude of the American Jewish Workers; Humor in Occupied Warsaw; The Hell of the Concentration Camp in Oswiecim; Treblinka A Ghetto for Women; Two Jewish Ghettos in One Town; etc. Issues for 1941 are published by American Friends of Polish Democracy. Paperback, 8vo, 120, 144 pages, 23 cm. Languages: Text in English and Yiddish. A Judenrat was "a body heading a Jewish community, appointed by the German occupying authorities during World War II, which was responsible for the enforcement of Nazi orders affecting the Jews and for the administration of the affairs of the Jewish community. The Nazi leadership came to the conclusion that the existence of comprehensive councils representing all the Jewish factions of a city or state would make the execution of their anti-Jewish policies easier. Such bodies were in existence in Germany, Vienna, and Prague, but they were called by various names other than Judenrat and differed in their varying degrees of dependence on Nazi factors (principally the Gestapo). With the German occupation of Poland the decision to set up bodies under this name was endorsed by the central authorities, and Heydrich sent this decision to the commanders of the Einsatzgruppen in a secret letter dated Sept. 21, 1939, which included the following paragraph: 'In each Jewish community a council of Jewish elders is to be set up.'"
