Gershom, Levi Ben Feldman, Seymour Feldman, Seymour
The Wars of The Lord: Volume Three (only) Jewish Publication Society of America. Hardcover, 580 pages. The Wars of the Lord is the major treatise of Levi ben Gershorn of Provence (1288-l344), one of the outstanding philosophers of the medieval world. The work, an unparalleled achievement of Jewish thought, is devoted to a demonstration that the Torah, properly understood, is identical to true philosophy. Volume Three concludes this work with a translation of the two longest books of the treatise: Books Five and Six, each of which consists of several parts. In Book Five, the focus is clearly celestial: even when Gersonides discusses earthly matters, such as biological reproduction, he is primarily concerned with the influences of the heavenly domain upon terrestrial phenomena. In Part Three of Book Five, he even explores the domain of separate intelligences, some of which are called "angels" in popular religious literature. It is in this section that one finds Gersonides's most systematic discussion of the nature of God. Book Six focuses on one of the most controversial questions in medieval philosophy: the creation of the universe. Beginning with a critique of various cosmological theories in ancient and medieval literature, Gersonides goes on to develop his own theory of creation, which diverges markedly from most of his Jewish philosophical predecessors such as Saadia Gaon and Maimonides. His theory borrows heavily from Greek thought, particularly from Plato. Other issues discussed in this book include time and infinity, and the role of miracles in prophecy. Whereas Volumes One and Two focus primarily on human affairs-the intellect and its immortality, and God's relationship with humanity-this last volume has a much wider scope: God's relationship with the entire Universe. Also contained in this volume are an Appendix by Tzvi Langermann on Gersonides and Astrology, plus a bibliography, a critical apparatus, and a cumulative index. This is the first complete modern-language rendering of Gersonides's fourteenth-century masterpiece. New Condition, lacks dust jacket ISBN: 0-8276-0638-9 $20.00 |

• Klinghoffer, David.
THE LORD WILL GATHER ME IN : MY JOURNEY TO JEWISH ORTHODOXY.
New York, Free Press, 1999. Cloth, 8vo, 262 pages. ISBN: 0684823411. See rear cover, table of content, and first 12 pages
here. "Why would a comfortably affluent, well-educated, secular Jew seek out the rigorous discipline of traditional Jewish observance? This is the intriguing question behind not just David Klinghoffer's personal story, but the growing movement of Jewish ba'alei
teshuvah. In recent decades, tens of thousands of young Jews have returned to Orthodox Judaism, responding in a startling way to the spiritual hunger felt by millions of Americans. They have found that Orthodoxy means not withdrawing from the world, but coming to feel God's presence in every facet of life.
Klinghoffer, one of these newly traditional Jews, also happens to be a highly articulate, sensitive, and sympathetic writer who states his beliefs so reasonably that readers will be hard-pressed to explain why everyone isn't Orthodox. Writing with style and wit, Klinghoffer describes his secular Jewish parents; his 1970s Southern California upbringing, complete with professional disco dancers at his bar mitzvah; and his first serious girlfriend, a committed Catholic. Behind all these experiences are nagging questions: Why do some Jews persist in observing Torah commandments that to the uninitiated seem impossibly esoteric? After three millennia, why is the Jewish tradition still so puzzling and disturbing, to Jews no less than to non-Jews? Slowly, at first clumsily, young David explores traditional Judaism. Wanting to do the right thing, he tries to ceremonially re-circumcise himself in a bathtub at home -- at the age of twelve. By adulthood he feels that God is guiding him in some particular direction. An adoptee, he often thinks of the line from Psalm 27, "Should my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will gather me in." Yet even after two more conversions, he doesn't understand the heart of Judaism until after he has set out to find his Swedish birth mother, a non-Jew, who reveals to him a family secret that sends David on a research mission to Stockholm. There, among 200-year-old birth and death records from a Swedish church, he discovers what it means to be a Jew."
