Friends-

We are pleased to publish our latest catalog:

Catalog 155: Yizkor Books & Related Titles: A Selection of Over 125 Items.

We offer, first, a bit of context from the New York Public Library Dorot Jewish Division's Yizkor Book Project:

“The first yizkor book was produced in 1296 in Nuremberg (of all places), for use in the synagogue constructed there that year. The model on which all later yizkor books are based, this Memorbuch of Isaac ben Samuel of Meiningen is a record of communities decimated and individuals slaughtered across Ashkenaz—the old heartland of north European Jewish life, from the Rhine to the Danube—during the two hundred years since 1096, when, one Sabbath in springtime, the knights of the First Crusade murdered the Jews of Speyer….

A phenomenon for the most part of the late 1950s, the 1960s, and the early 1970s, the yizkor books evoked by the Holocaust were edited, privately printed, and distributed (often free of charge) by committees of survivors of many hundreds of the former Jewish population centers of eastern Europe, and generally they culminate in lists of community members who did not survive the war. Over the centuries, however, traditional yizkor books (or Memorbücher, as they were called in the original Ashkenazi lands of Central Europe) had expanded beyond commemorating only the victims of persecution to record also the outstanding personages who had adorned the community in good times as well as bad. True to this spirit, the activists in the post-war yizkor book revival sought both to commemorate the dead and to recollect and celebrate, as well, the quality of life of the communities of which they had been a part. Where yizkor books contain lists of names, therefore, these are prefaced by personal memoirs and biographical sketches, and much emphasis is placed, too, on essays that describe local Jewish society in all the diversity represented by its organizations: political, intellectual, artistic, professional, and recreational, as well as philanthropic and spiritual.

Typically, these books were published in Israel or New York, or, occasionally, in Buenos Aires. The essays in these volumes may be all in Hebrew, or all in Yiddish, or some in one language and some in the other. Not infrequently, a brief English-language summary appears at the end; in a few cases, there may be substantial content in English, Hungarian, or other languages. Holocaust memorial books tend to be long, frequently running to 600-900 pages, and they are unindexed. Many of the volumes are extensively illustrated with photographs, although the images, themselves survivors of the Holocaust, have sometimes suffered damage and the quality of reproduction is not always particularly high, in line with the book production values of the time….
Yizkor books were published in very small quantities and at a time when permanent paper was little used. As a result, these volumes, which were meant to perpetuate the memory of a ‘vanished world,’ are often hard to find, and, in some cases, are themselves in danger of vanishing….

In the wake of the events of 1933-1945, the yizkor book re-emerged as one of the most important elements in Jewish literary endeavor for a whole generation. The rise of this quintessentially medieval genre and its return to the forefront in the twentieth century can serve as a pair of matching bookends for northern Europe's lengthy run as one of the poles of global Jewish civilization." (NYPL, 2012)

In Yiddish. Heavily illustrated. A Memorial Book about the Destruction of Krynik; “Krynik in Khurbn” (translates as Holocaust in Krynik). “A memorial book, by Abraham Soifer a Krynker survivor, was published in 1948 by the Krynker Relief Union of Uruguay and Argentina. The book, 269 pages, printed in Montevideo is illustrated and contains a map of Krynik on which the ghetto limits are drawn. The author dedicates the opening chapter to ‘young memories of a dear time in the past, ’ describing life in the shtetl until the outbreak of the Second World War. Then he goes on to events in Krynki from the beginning of the war and describes life in the shtetl under the Red Army until the sudden attack by the Germans in June 1941. Then Soifer describes his flight from home to the East, his joining a Russian partisan group and his perilous return during his mission to Krynki. Here he first describes what he found, saw and lived through in the ghetto and the destruction of the community. Soifer further describes his survival with the remnant in the work camp where the Nazis, after forcing out the Jews from Krynik, ‘employed’ slaves to do the work of Hitler's war machine. These were a couple of hundred Jewish tradesmen and from there they were taken on their last journey to Auschwitz. In the rest of the book A. Soifer tells what happened and the suffering he saw and endured in the ‘king of demons’ destruction in the extermination camps and what he and other Krynkers experienced. They all displayed valor and were heroic and generously helped to fight these evil men and even took part in the plan to blow up the crematoria. We have taken excerpts from ‘Krynik in Khurbn’ and put them in our Yizkor Book. ” (Page 347 of “Pinkas Krynki” Edited by: D. VIII, 2008 pages. 29 cm. In Yiddish. First edition. Edited by Mendel Sudarsky, Uriah Katzenelenbogen, J. Kissen. Volume 2 edited by Ch. Leikowicz and published in Tel Aviv by Farlag Y. L. Perets. This Yizkor volume consists of hundreds of testimonies and local histories compiled by Lithuanian survivors and landsmanshaftn detailing their communities history and the destruction thereof, is an extremely important contribution to regional Jewish historiography and to knowledge about the Holocaust era in Europe. From the preface to the second volume: “The survivors from Lite around the world, and those who stemmed from Lite in the State of Israel, had already made efforts to publish compilations in Yiddish and Hebrew that tried to tell about the seven hundred-year history of Jewish-Lithuanian Jewry and to mourn its tragic murder. It was with great devotion and faithfulness that this holy work was taken on, in his time, by the late Dr. Mendl Sudarsky [of blessed memory]. He was the foundation layer and editor of the momentous compilation Lite (published in 1951 in New York) which was received by the general Jewish public with such appreciation. By the time of the publication of the first volume of Lite, Dr. Sudarsky already collected and prepared materials for a further book, which he was, unfortunately, not destined to publish. His collected manuscripts remained with his widow, Alte Sudarsky, who had always taken pains to see the book published. So ten years raced by, until she was able to realize that here, in Israel, in the Y. L Perets Publishing House. Her single desire in life was to see a printed copy of Volume Two, and for that she literally bled and gave her last energies. To our deep sorrow she died while she was preparing to return to New York and as the second volume of Lite was being typeset. May the earth of Israel be light on her! We intend to present the second volume in the same spirit as its forerunner, the first volume. In general we have consciously left the style and the form of each participant in the book, and the author alone bears the responsibility for its content and composition. The editors permitted themselves only, for the most part, to provide comments. As far as it was within our domain to do so, we have included a few new articles and pictures. In this volume there are additional articles that introduce historical material for the research of Jewish life in Lite. Subjects: Jews - Lithuania - History. Lithuania - Ethnic relations. Memorial volumes. Lithuania - History. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) - Lithuania. Cities and towns - Lithuania. OCLC lists copies 8 copies worldwide. 247. • (Zlobin) Levine, Murray; David Bolton; Reuben Hankin; Sam Meltzer. ZLOBINER BENEVOLENT SOCIETY NOTICE [BROCHURE AND POSTER]. Brooklyn; Zlobiner Benevolent Society Inc, 1964 - [1970?]. Brochure. 4to. [2]; [4] pages. Large poster of the Zlobiner Benevolent Society; and later four page brochure. Both items carry a Notice of meeting dates; a listing of officers, undertaker and hospitale; and a long listing of individual members of the society and their home addresses. The quantity of members in the directory, meeting location, officers and meeting time change to a minor degree from one Notice to the other; the fold out brochure is not dated, but is most likely of a more recent year. The Zlobiner Benevolent Society was based in the East Flatbush neighborhood, where the meetings were held at the East Flatbush Jewish Center and in the 1964 brochure, at a house on Saratoga Ave. Many of the members relocated to elsewhere in Brooklyn, to the Bronx, and to Florida. The undertaker, I. J. Morris, established in Brooklyn in 1888, is still a thriving institution in Brooklyn and Boca Raton Florida. These brochures are printed in blue ink on thick cardstock; the uppermost border displays an American and an Israeli flag, and two clasped hands meeting in the middle. It states that the Zobliner Benevolent Society was organized June 22nd, 1924; this may be related to either a split from the Rogatchover-Zlobiner Branch 115 of the Workmens Circle, or simply a benevolent society not in bibliographies (it does not appear in the WPA Yiddish Writer's Group Study (1938) of “2145 organizations […] listed in Di yidishe landsmanshaftn fun nyu york (The Jewish Landsmanshaftn of New York) ”. Subjects: Benevolent Society. Lightly aged, some soiling to older publication; otherwise fresh and crisp. Good + condition. (YIZ-13-31) (ID #30670) $125.00.
