THE FIRST HAGADAH PRINTED IN PERSIA

Teheran [Tehran]: Matba`a Danesh Natsriyeh, 1933. 1st edition. Later Cloth, 8vo, 56 pages.; 21 cm. Yudlov 3476. The first Hagadah printed in Persia (Iran). Text in Hebrew and Judeo-Persian. OCLC lists only 2 copies worldwide (Brandeis, Harvard). ” The beginnings of Jewish history in the area of present-day Iran date back to late biblical times. The biblical books of Isaiah, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Chronicles, and Esther contain references to the life and experiences of Jews in Persia. In the book of Ezra, the Persian kings are credited with permitting and enabling the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their Temple; its reconstruction was affected ‘according to the decree of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia’ (Ezra 6: 14). This great event in Jewish history took place in the late sixth century BCE, by which time there was a well-established and influential Jewish community in Persia. Jews in ancient Persia mostly lived in their own communities. Persian Jews lived in the ancient (and until the mid-20th century still extant) communities not only of Iran, but of present-day Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan…. Scholars believe that during the peak of the Persian Empire, Jews may have comprised as much as 20% of the population” (Wikipedia 2015). Jacob Nathanael Weil, Rabbi of Karlsruhe. Rabbi Yedidya Tia Weil (1722-1806), who was among the giants of his generation, son of Rabbi Netanel Weil, author of Korban Netanel and prominent disciple of Rabbi Yehonatan Eibeshitz. He corresponded with the Ba’al HaHafla’ah as well as the Noda B’Yehudah. Served as Av Beit Din of Karlsruhe and Baden as successor to his father, since 1770. While during his lifetime, only his commentary Marbeh LeSaper on the Haggadah of Pesach was printed, anonymously, today dozens of his manuscripts are being printed. 3. [New York, Jewish Theological Seminary]. THE PRATO HAGGADAH. 2006 (ca. 1300). Full leather, 14 x 21 cm, 160 pp + commentary. The Prato Haggadah (Spain, ca.1300) is an unfinished illuminated manuscript of 85 leaves, written on fine calf parchment. Folios 1–53 are written in a square Sephardic script and folios 54–68 are written in a square Italo-Ashkenazic script, using a different ink. The illumination of 30 pages is virtually complete. 58 are unfinished, with preparatory drawings and possibly some gesso and color, 50 have text only and the remaining pages are blank. Many of the pages have illuminated initial word panels, comparable to illuminated initials in Christian or secular manuscripts. Throughout, illustrations accompany the text, such as the depiction of the four sons, and illustrations of matza and maror (bitter herbs). Preparatory drawings depicting the story of Noah and the flood appear at the end of the manuscript. Margins are replete with fanciful drawings of hybrid creatures, imaginary birds, drolleries and climbing vines. The codex is especially fascinating because it demonstrates the making of a manuscript in the Middle Ages, enabling us to view its illumination after the text was written: the preparatory drawings, the laying down of gesso in order to cushion the gold leaf, the application of gold and silver leaf, and ultimately the application of pigments. The skill of the artist is of a very high order, both in the preparatory drawings and in the completed pages, whose brilliant colors look as fresh today as when they were applied. Printed and bound as an exact replica of the highest quality of the 13th Century illuminated manuscript in appropriate leather boards and parchment-like leaves. Limited edition of 250 copies. In his article for volume 77 of the American Jewish Year Book entitled "Jewish Scholarship in the United States: Selections from the Literature, 1973-1975," Menahem Schmelzer highlighted Freedman's Polychrome Haggadah: "Seven colors indicate the seven periods, from biblical to modern, in which the various layers of the Haggadah came into being. Marginal comments on each passage give the source and comprehensive references to scholarly literature. Freedman's new translation and reproductions of many beautiful pages from medieval Haggadah manuscripts make this Haggadah particularly attractive." (1977, pp. 211-212). Goldschmidt was born in Koenigshuette (now Chorzow, Poland), where his father was rabbi. He served from 1926 to 1935 as librarian in the Prussian State Library, Berlin. Immigrating to Palestine in 1936, he joined the staff of the Jewish National and University Library (1936–62). Goldschmidt prepared critical editions of various liturgical texts. His various Passover Haggadot (with German translation, introduction, and notes, 1936, 1937; Hebrew, 1947, 1960) became very popular; the Haggadah by N. N. While the haggadah's text is written in accordance with the Spanish rite, at some point additional text, which included liturgical poems of the Ashkenazic rite, was added, most likely in Italy. A 1617 signature of an Italian church censor, Giovanni Domenico Carretto is proof that the manuscript actually was in Italy at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Nothing further is known of the haggadah's history until 1928, when it was in the possession of Dr. Ludwig Pollak, a native of Prague living in Rome. A distinguished humanist and collector of classical art, literary manuscripts, books and Judaica, Dr. Pollak promised the haggadah to his friend Rabbi David Prato, Chief Rabbi of Rome. After disagreements with the Fascist authorities in the late 1930s, Rabbi Prato moved to Palestine. Dr. Pollak, his wife and son, along with other members of the Jewish community of Rome, were deported to Auschwitz, where they perished. After the war, Rabbi Prato was recalled to his previous position in Rome and served the community until his death in 1951. Shortly after the Rabbi's demise, his only son Jeonathan, an Israeli diplomat en route to his post in Buenos Aires, was visited by the sister-in-law of Dr. Pollak in Rome. Knowing of Dr. Pollak's intention to donate the manuscript to the rabbi, she fulfilled the promise and gave the haggadah to the rabbi's only surviving heir. The Prato Haggadah was purchased by the JTS Library in 1964. The art of the Prato Haggadah is witty and imaginative. The manuscript is replete with decorated initial word panels, foliate ornamentation, and hybrid figures. Several illustrations relate directly to the text... The Prato Haggadah contains motifs common in medieval manuscripts, and many folios reflect the artist's sense of humor... For reasons that remain obscure, the manuscript's illumination was never completed. It is precisely the unfinished nature of the codex that allows the viewer to see the stages of production of an illuminated manuscript: the scribal arrangement of the text; the artist's preparatory drawings; the application of gesso to cushion gold or silver leaf; the addition of the leaf; the painting of a wide variety of pigments; and the outlining of the illuminations with ink. The text of the Prato Haggadah is also distinctive. Although it includes the standard biblical, talmudic, and midrashic texts, as well as the liturgical poetry common to other Spanish Haggadot, the Prato Haggadah lacks all elements associated with the Passover meal. Kiddush, blessings for matzah and maror, instructions for the feast itself, and grace after meals are absent. Scholars have suggested that Haggadot of this kind may have been written to be read publicly in the synagogue, after which people would return to their homes for the meal. This phenomenon is found in other Spanish Haggadot and is explained by medieval sources as satisfying the requirement to recount the story of the Exodus for people unable to lead or attend a seder. Many Sephardic Jews immigrated to Italy following the expulsions from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the fifteenth century, often taking their manuscripts with them. Though we do not know when the Prato Haggadah left Spain, the manuscript includes an Ashkenazic liturgical section probably added in northern Italy in the sixteenth century and a censor's signature from Italy dated 1617. In addition, the volume contains many textual emendations and corrections inserted over several centuries. Though the Spanish or Ashkenazic sections of the manuscript cannot be definitively dated or localized, scribal practices and liturgical variants provide a general overview of the history of the manuscript and its owners” (JTS 2010). Born in Nogaisk, Russia, Raskin studied lithography in Odessa, and attended art academies in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy. In 1904, he emigrated to the U. S. He worked in many media and garnered a reputation for his draftsmanlike attention to detail and his realistic approach. His imagery depicted scenes of Jewish life, especially that of New York’s Lower East Side. His trips to Palestine yielded many representations of that country’s Jewish population, among them twenty lithographs of Jerusalem. Raskin also illustrated many Hebrew texts, including Pirke Aboth, the Haggadah, Psalms, the Siddur, Kabbalah in Word and Image, and other works with Jewish content, such as Hebrew Rhapsody. Pirke Aboth demonstrates Raskin’s wonderful sense of design; he makes dramatic use of blank space as a component of his compositions as well as underscores the meaning of each of the book’s sections with a powerful combination of human and fantastic forms, each revealing carefully rendered details of expression. Raskin was the art and theater critic for the Yiddish weekly magazine Does Neie Land. In 1911, Raskin’s “The Future of Jewish Art, ” appeared in the magazine. In the article, Raskin bemoans the inability to find common Jewish attributes in the works of such artists as Antokolsky, Israels, Liebermann, and Pissarro. Raskin postulated that a Jewish Art (sic) might emerge through the identification of common themes and subjects in the work of his contemporaries, specifically in genre and history paintings, rather than through an examination of the widely varied techniques, forms, and styles used by artists of Jewish heritage. Raskin’s work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy. Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum grew up in Queens, the son of Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Teitelbaum, and later moved to the Boro Park section of Brooklyn. He taught sacred texts for nearly 40 years in the primary school of the Yeshiva-Mesivta Torah Temimah in Brooklyn, where he was also director of curriculum. Teitelbaum founded and ran Camp S’dei Chemed International summer camp in Israel. Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum, an ultra-Orthodox educator and innovator, wrote this Haggadah after years of discussions with his students: “One must realize that many of their questions can probably be found in the Meforshim, and a variety of answers can be found in all four different parts of Torah, be it p’shat, remez, drush and sod. However, I’ve tried my best to answer them in the simplest manner possible in order to show them that their questions can be answered even on the very basic level. ” (From the Preface). Kedem’s history traces back to 1848 as the Royal wine supplier to Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph. “The winery was seized by the Nazis at the onset of World War II and placed under the control of a Christian man designated to manage production. The Herzogs survived the war in hiding and were supported with smuggled profits from the winery. In 1948, after the Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia, Eugene Herzog, the head of the Herzog family, moved the family to the United States. Settling in New York City, Eugene Herzog went to work for Royal Wine Corp. Which was started by the Pluczenik brothers in the 1940s as a winemaker, truck driver and salesman. Part of Eugene’s salary was paid in company shares and by 1958, Eugene was a majority stockholder and purchased the company. Eugene, with his four sons, incorporated the name Kedem, and began a quest to regain the splendor of the Herzog family name. Moses (1847-1926) was a “U. S. Reform rabbi. Moses, who was born in Zaniemysl, Poznan, had not completed his education before he settled in the United States in the early 1870s. He was appointed to rabbinic positions in Quincy, Illinois, Milwaukee, and Chicago. In 1901 he became rabbi of the Central Synagogue, New York, where he remained until his retirement in 1919. In his early days in the United States, Moses was considered a radical Reformer, but later he took a more moderate position. In 1884 he introduced his own prayer book (Tefillat Yisrael). Moses was a founding member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and a member of the Reform committee charged with compiling an official prayer book. The appearance of the Union Prayer Book in 1894 has been credited to his personal initiative in preparing and circulating a manuscript when the committee’s work seemed to be leading nowhere. Moses also published a number of sermons and textbooks for children. His Sabbath School Hymnal, first issued in 1894, ran into 14 editions. He was active in Va'ad Hazzalah, trying to rescue Jews during the Holocaust, spending two months in London and Paris in 1945 helping refugees. Published on the heels of the secret Yemenite Airlift to Israel. “Operation Magic Carpet is a widely known nickname for Operation On Wings of Eagles (Hebrew: Kanfei Nesharim), an operation between June 1949 and September 1950 that brought 49, 000 Yemenite Jews to the new state of Israel. During its course, the overwhelming majority of Yemenite Jews – some 47, 000 Yemeni, 1, 500 Aden as well as 500 Djiboutian and Eritrean Jews – were airlifted to Israel. British and American transport planes made some 380 flights from Aden, in a secret operation that was not made public until several months after it was over” (Wikipedia 2014) Etz Hayim was written by Rabbi Yichya ben Yosef Tzala at the end of the eighthteenth or beginning of the nineteenth century. He was considered one of the greatest Yemenite rabbis of his generation. He passed away on the 28th of Nissan in the year 5565 (1805). This commentary was part of a larger work on the Siddur, which was later published in Jerusalem in 1904. Early in his life, Tzala was a proponent of Sephardic minhag and the laws as reflected in Rabbi Joseph Karo’s Shulchan Aruch. During this period Sephardic minhag, customs, began to make headway in Yemenite synagogues. One of the influential leaders of this period, Rabbi Shalom ben Aharon HaKohen Araki (Rashba), was a proponent of the Sephardic tradition. He was a wealthy contributor and leader of the Jewish community of Zana. Rabbi Araki used his wealth to place Sephardic prayer books in synagogues throughout the area. His efforts were vigorously opposed by Rabbi Yehudah Tza’adi, Rabbi Tzala's teacher. Araki threatened sanctions against Tza’adi, but he refused to back down. Rabbi Tzala was deeply influenced by this debate and because of it renewed to his commitment to the ancient Yemenite minhag. Tzala writes about the debate in the introduction to his commentary. According to the Etz Hayim, the debate went on for two years but, in the end, the two sides resolved their differences and promised to treat each other with respect and honor. Tzala maintained his point of view in favor of Yemenite custom, but he described his opponent, the Rashba, as a “light in Israel” and the Rashba, in turn, continued to honor Rabbi Tza'adi. In his commentary Rabbi Tzala analyzes the roots of the various customs and discusses whether or not they are authentic Yemenite practices. Subjects: Haggada shel Pesah. Etz Hayim. Hagada for the Seder Evenings, by Hermann Falkenberg, founder of a liberal synagogue on Berlin’s Schoenhauser Allee, died in 1936. His wife, Bertha Falkenberg, was a pioneer for the rights of Jewish women in the pre-war years. A longtime president of the Berlin Jewish Women’s League, she fought for the voting rights of women as synagogue members. A plaque dedicated to the Falkenberg’s was commemorated in 2003; affixed to the outer wall of 22 Lottumstrasse in former East Berlin, it marks the last address of the Falkenbergs. Yaari 2498. This Haggadah is described by the original author as a "musaf" (supplementary material), rather than as a Haggadah. An absolutely wonderful piece of literature. Includes a very informative (30+ page) introduction about the post-Holocaust situation of the surviving Jews. Also full of wonderful poetry and artwork, created by victims both during and after the Holocaust. Can be used for supplementary material; It contains a great amount of new material relevant to the Holocaust that is not present in traditional haggadot. It also contains modified versions of several recognizable parts of the traditional Haggadah text, but the meaning of the modified version is usually quite different from that of the traditional text. For example, the answer offered for why we eat bitter herbs is: "Because we were intoxicated by the incense of Diaspora... Because we did little to help ourselves and reestablish our destroyed homes and country. " The message of this Haggadah's version of the four sons is not the telling of the story of Passover, but the insistence on the right to a homeland. Some blessings that are addressed to God in the traditional Haggadah are addressed to the Allied Forces in the Survivors' Haggadah. "Dayenu" is presented as a list of atrocities that God allowed to be carried out against the Jews, rather than a list of things we thank God for. Abraham b. Jacob also used miscellaneous scenes taken from other works by Merian. The 'wise son' and the 'son who could not ask, ' for example, come from an engraving of Hannibal sacrificing before the altar, while the scene of the sages celebrating at Bene-Berak is reproduced – with some alterations – from Merian's picture of the feast given by Joseph to his brethren. The first map of Eretz Israel known in a Jewish publication was added on a folding page at the end of the book. It is adorned with thirteen large illustration, some of which depict events not mentioned in the text (but whose protagonists are somehow alluded to) ... Many of the illustrations seem to closely follow the famous copper plate illustrations of the Amsterdam Haggadah of 1695. The text of the Haggadah is in square Hebrew script [with some parts in old Yiddish]... This facsimile edition is true to the original size... Typography of this Haggadah, which alternates small and large letters, and contains inverted letters at the end of many lines was a common feature of texts produced by scribes and preserved the look of manuscript Haggadahs. Kohen's Haggadah included sixty woodcut illustrations and played a critical role in establishing the iconographic genres among Haggadahs well into the twentieth century. One example is the four woodcuts on the pages describing the famed "four sons. " Not only are all the sons clothed in Renaissance fashion, but more importantly the "wicked son" is depicted as a traditional soldier of the period. While his uniform would change to fit current fashions, the wicked son appeared for many centuries in the form of a soldier, thus linking wickedness with war for the Jewish people in the early modern and modern periods. In addition, one can see several pages later a pictorial rendition of Pharaoh in a tub, a theme which is present in Haggadahs well into the twentieth century. The “Sarajevo Haggadah (Sarajevo National Museum) is a 14th-century Spanish illuminated manuscript composed of the traditional three parts: 34 full-page miniatures (fols. 1v–34); illuminated Haggadah text (fols. 1–50); and piyyutim and Torah readings for Passover week (fols. 53–131). It is by far the best-known Hebrew illuminated manuscript, and has been reproduced in part twice during the last 70 years with scholarly introductions by H. Mueller and J. Von Schlosser, and by C. Roth. The full-page miniatures in the Sarajevo Haggadah display the widest range of subjects even among the rich Spanish Haggadot, from the Creation of the World to Moses blessing the Israelites and Joshua before his death, followed by illustrations of the Temple, preparations for Passover, and the interior of a Spanish synagogue. There are few full-page miniatures; most are divided horizontally into two framed sections, with some in four sections. Although the greater part of the iconography of the miniatures is derived from Latin Bible illumination of the Franco-Spanish school, some Jewish elements can be detected, as in the abstention from representation of God or any heavenly beings. Other Jewish aspects can be found in the text illustrations of the Haggadah, such as a miniature of Rabban Gamaliel and his students, and the matzah and maror. Stylistically, the illuminations are related to the Italian-gothic school prevailing in Catalonia in the 14th century. That the Sarajevo Haggadah originates from the Kingdom of Aragon can be inferred from three coats of arms displayed in the manuscript. Illustrated by Erwin Singer Born in Hungary, [Abraham Moritz] Silbermann [1889-1939] was ordained as a rabbi at Berlin Rabbinical Seminary, but engaged in publishing and bookselling… his Children’s Haggadah was popular” (Encyclopedia Judaica). This book was a featured selection in the Brooklyn Public Library’s 2000 exhibition, Brooklyn Pops Up!: The History and Art of the Movable Book. The illustrations with moving parts depict baby Moses on the Nile, the Jews’ bondage in Egypt, the plagues, the Pharaoh’s army in the Red Sea, and the hiding and finding of the afikomen at a contemporary Seder. He aided in the organization of the Jewish Publication Society of America, in the spring of 1888.” (EJ 2006) Joseph Krauskopf (1858-1923) was an “American rabbi and author; born in Ostrowo, Prussia, Jan. 21, 1858. He emigrated to America (New York) in July, 1872, and from New York he went to Fall River, Mass., where he found employment as clerk in a tea-store. Through the influence of friends Krauskopf secured admittance into the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati (Oct., 1875). While studying there and in the University of Cincinnati, Krauskopf acted as a tutor, contributed articles to journals, and published (with H. Berkowitz) "The First Union Hebrew Reader" and ‘Second Union Hebrew Reader’ and ‘Bible Ethics’ (1883). He graduated from the university and from the Hebrew Union College (rabbi) in 1883. In 1885 the faculty of the college conferred upon him the degree of D. D. Krauskopf received and accepted a call from the Bnai Jehudah congregation in Kansas City, Mo. He was appointed by the governor of Missouri as a life-member of the Board of National Charities and Corrections, and in 1885 was elected vice-president of the Pittsburg Conference, of which Dr. I. D. A. Chwolson (Daniel Avraamovich Khvolson, 1819–1911) was a Russian Orientalist. “Chwolson was born of poor, devout Jewish parents in Vilna. In 1841 he went to Breslau, where Abraham *Geiger befriended him and helped him prepare for matriculation at the university. Later he returned to Russia, settling in St. Petersburg. In 1855 Chwolson became a convert of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was then appointed professor of Hebrew, Syriac, and Chaldaic philology at the University of St. Petersburg, and three years later he was given the corresponding chair at both the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic theological academies in the same city. In this triple capacity he taught practically every eminent Semitic scholar in Russia during the second half of the 19th century and after. Among his disciples were the greatest Russian Orientalists. Despite his conversion, Chwolson remained well disposed toward Jews and Judaism and retained his friendship with many eminent Jewish scholars and leaders. He was particularly welcome in Jewish Orthodox circles because of his frequent intervention on their behalf when government officials threatened the yeshivot or the publication of the Talmud. “Das letzte Passahmahl Christi und der Tag seines Todes” (1892), while meant as an answer to antisemitic accusations, is a learned and detailed investigation of the circumstances of Jesus' trial and condemnation. Short, but detailed philological article and polemic locating the irreconcilable contradiction between the synoptic and non-synoptic gospels, on the subject of Paschal, the date Jesus was arrested, and the name of the festival (of unleavened bread); Zeitlin locates in the Talmud and Josephus where the celebration is renamed festival of the passover. The author, Solomon Zeitlin (1892–1976), “U. S. Scholar of post-biblical literature. … Zeitlin received a Ph. D. At Dropsie College, Philadelphia, in 1917; his dissertation was on Megillat Ta'anit as a Source for Jewish Chronology and History in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods (1922). Zeitlin taught first at Yeshiva College, New York, then became professor of rabbinics at Dropsie College in 1921. As an outstanding authority on the Second Commonwealth period, he wrote over 400 articles and books in the fields of rabbinics, Josephus, the Apocrypha, and Christianity. Zeitlin's assertions that the so-called Christ passage in Josephus was not authentic but only an interpolation by Eusebius, contrary to the opinion of most scholars, gained him early scholarly fame (JQR 18 (1927/28), 231–55).
