OCLC lists only 2 copies worldwide (Brandeis, Harvard). ” The beginnings of Jewish history in the area of present-day Iran date back to late biblical times. The biblical books of Isaiah, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Chronicles, and Esther contain references to the life and experiences of Jews in Persia. In the book of Ezra, the Persian kings are credited with permitting and enabling the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their Temple; its reconstruction was affected ‘according to the decree of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia’ (Ezra 6: 14). This great event in Jewish history took place in the late sixth century BCE, by which time there was a well-established and influential Jewish community in Persia. Jews in ancient Persia mostly lived in their own communities. Persian Jews lived in the ancient (and until the mid-20th century still extant) communities not only of Iran, but of present-day Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan…. Scholars believe that during the peak of the Persian Empire, Jews may have comprised as much as 20% of the population” (Wikipedia 2015). 10. [New York, Jewish Theological Seminary]. THE PRATO HAGGADAH. 2006 (ca. 1300). Full leather, 14 x 21 cm, 160 pp + commentary. The Prato Haggadah (Spain, ca.1300) is an unfinished illuminated manuscript of 85 leaves, written on fine calf parchment. Folios 1–53 are written in a square Sephardic script and folios 54–68 are written in a square Italo-Ashkenazic script, using a different ink. The illumination of 30 pages is virtually complete. 58 are unfinished, with preparatory drawings and possibly some gesso and color, 50 have text only and the remaining pages are blank. Many of the pages have illuminated initial word panels, comparable to illuminated initials in Christian or secular manuscripts. Throughout, illustrations accompany the text, such as the depiction of the four sons, and illustrations of matza and maror (bitter herbs). Preparatory drawings depicting the story of Noah and the flood appear at the end of the manuscript. Margins are replete with fanciful drawings of hybrid creatures, imaginary birds, drolleries and climbing vines. The codex is especially fascinating because it demonstrates the making of a manuscript in the Middle Ages, enabling us to view its illumination after the text was written: the preparatory drawings, the laying down of gesso in order to cushion the gold leaf, the application of gold and silver leaf, and ultimately the application of pigments. The skill of the artist is of a very high order, both in the preparatory drawings and in the completed pages, whose brilliant colors look as fresh today as when they were applied. Printed and bound as an exact replica of the highest quality of the 13th Century illuminated manuscript in appropriate leather boards and parchment-like leaves. Limited edition of 250 copies. A treasure to behold. (ID #31324) $4700.00.

FIRST AMERICAN REFORM HAGADAH

12. Jastrow, Marcus. HIGAYON LEV ISRAELITISCHES GEBETBUCH FÜR DIE HÄUSLICHE ANDACHT [INCLUDING THE FIRST AMERICAN REFORM HAGGADAH] [BOUND WITH] GEBETE FÜR KINDER [AS ISSUED] (1875). Philadelphia: 1875. 1st edition thus. Original cloth binding, 8vo, [4], 164, 20 pages (188 pages total). Text in Hebrew and German. Goldman 63; This edition unrecorded and apparently unknown to Ya'ari or Yudlov. THE FIRST AMERICAN REFORM HAGGADAH. Higayon Lev (Logic of the Heart) was a liturgical volume for private devotion which was published to supplement the popular Avodat Yisrael prayerbook that Jastrow had created, based on the earlier work of Benjamin Szold. Jastrow’s revisions “creatively modified the classical contours of the Siddur preserved in Szold’s version and added many new prayers. ” Among its contents are: selections from Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers); daily prayers for women, children (and adults who lack the time to complete the regular liturgy) , all accompanied by a non-literal German translation. There is also a fascinating appendix of children’s prayers which includes, in addition to the more standard basic prayers, special prayers to be recited on one’s birthday as well as on a parent’s birthday. The most important component of the new edition however is Jastrow's Haggadah, (pages 35-54) , the first printed in America that demonstrates the influence of Reform. Here, the Hebrew elements are reduced to a minimum and incorporate many emendations, even to such quintessential texts as Ha Lahma Anya, Vehi She’amdah and the Four Questions (here reduced to a single query). When Jastrow reprinted the text with an English translation three years later, he wrote, "this plain narrative is well adapted to suggest many a thought as to what duties are incumbent on the Israelites of our own days, and especially in countries like ours where the morn of religious liberty has already dawned and is shedding its roseate light over all inhabitants alike. ” SUBJECT(S): Judaism -- Prayers and devotions. Reform Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Siddurim. OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide. Some wear and light staining, in the original blind-tooled binding, is (kh-6-1B) (ID #36544) $5500.00.

13. Navon, Arieh [Illustrated] Cohen Va-Levi [Ed. ]. HAGADAH SHEL TEL AVIV - LE-HAG HA-MESHULASH: PESACH, MUHARRAM, U-YOVELAH SHEL HA-IR. Tel Aviv: Satira, 1934. Original paper wrappers. 8vo, 16 pages, 24 cm. In Hebrew. The title translates to "A Tel Aviv Haggadah: A Tri-fold Holiday for Pesach, Muharram, and the Jubilee of the City. " This haggadah is a brilliantly illustrated piece of satire that combines a parody of life in Tel Aviv and Israel, with the traditional Passover haggadah. Reflecting Israel's various religious and non-religious communities, the haggadah references the Muslim holy month of Muharram, in which Sunni Muslims fast in honor of God and Musa's victory over the Pharaoh. The secular Tel-Avivian also factors prominently into this Haggadah, celebrating the city's 50th anniversary while images of Pharaoh are replaced with Hitler and the British colonial authorities in Palestine. We found particularly poingient the Tel-Avivi rendition of Dayenu ("If he had delivered us from the Third Reich…"), complete with an illustration of a British officer whipping a new Jewish immigrant with the caption "…and they burdened us with Ministers of Taxes. " The haggadah also features satirical advertisements. Subjects: Passover -- Humor. Jewish wit and humor. Israeli wit and humor. Satire, Hebrew -- Israel. Israeli wit and humor. Jewish wit and humor. Passover. Satire, Hebrew. OCLC lists 3 copies (Harvard, Yale, Stanford), none outside New England and California. Pages are slightly edgeworn and wrappers are lightly soiled with small pen notation on margin of cover. Overall Very Good Condition. (Hag-18-16) (ID #36670) $1200.00.

FIRST ARBEITER RING ALTERNATIVE HAGADAH

14. Osipov, Shneor Zalman; Kanikov, M. HAGADAH L'ARK PESACH PROGRAM: WASHINGTON AUDITORIUM [ARBITER RING]. Dorshtester, Mas [Dorchester, Mass]: Independent Arbayter Ring Klub, 1931. 1st edition. Original blue illustrated cardboard wrappers. 8vo, 20 pages, 23 cm. In Yiddish. Not listed in Yaari. Presume this to be the first published Arbeiter Ring Hagadah, as we could find no mention of any others anywhere (the NLI’s earliest edition is from the 1940s). The traditional Hebrew seder is replaced with Yiddish while following the standard order of service. “Beatrice Weinreich…. Notes that these celebrations [Third Seders] date from the late teens of the twentieth century and emerged among Jews who had become alienated from more traditional observance. Various Yiddish-speaking groups, including Jewish socialists and Yiddishists, especially the Workmen’s Circle and Zionist groups such as the Histadrut, held Seders on nights other than the first two nights of Passover and used specially created Haggadot. Like members of kibbutzim in Israel from the mid-thirties to the early 1950s, these American Jews reveal a strong attachment to the Seder and a desire to update it, but no effort at formalizing their views in a widely published text. ” (Gereboff, 2003). SUBJECT(S): Hagadot, secular. Judaism -- Liturgy. OCLC lists only 1 copy worldwide (Brandeis). Horizontal tear across top 1/6th of title page. Shelfwear and soiling to wrappers. Internally clean with some pencil markings. Otherwise Very Good condition. Rare and important. (Hag-18-22) (ID #36677) $500.00.

16. Kraemer, David; Stavisky, Nellie; Centeno, Silvia A.; Schmelzer, Menahem; Cohen, Evelyn M; Steinberger, Naomi M. THE PRATO HAGGADAH [COMPANION VOLUME]. New York: Library Of The Jewish Theological Seminary; Valencia: In Collaboration With Patrimonio Ediciones, 2007. Hardcover, 107 pages, facsims, color illustrations, 23 cm. Facsimile text in Hebrew and Aramaic; modern texts in English. Contents: The Prato Haggadah: an investigation into the artists’ and scribes’ materials and techniques, and conservation treatment. Nellie Stavisky and Silvia A. Centeno -- The liturgy of the Prato Haggadah. Menahem Schmelzer -- The art of the Prato Haggadah. Evelyn M. Cohen. SUBJECT (S): Jewish illumination of books and manuscripts. Title Subject: Prato Haggadah -- Facsimiles. Haggadah (Ms. Prato Haggadah). Haggadah --Illustrations. Haggadah (Sephardic). This is the companion volume to the facsimile edition of the Prato Hagadah, a Sephardic Haggadah produced in Spain, ca. 1300, with incomplete illuminations. The manuscript lacks a colophon, but contains an Italian censor’s signature dated 1617. This companion volume (107 pages: color illustrations) contains an introduction and essays by David Kraemer... [et al. ] and is edited by Naomi M. Steinberger. Includes bibliographical referenes. OCLC lists 4 copies worldwide (JTS, Metropolitan Museum of Art, University of Pennsylvania, British Library). “Nothing at all is known of either the patron or scribe of the Prato Haggadah, and little is known of its whereabouts from the time it was produced in Spain, around 1300, until the time it was acquired by the JTS Library in l964. While the haggadah's text is written in accordance with the Spanish rite, at some point additional text, which included liturgical poems of the Ashkenazic rite, was added, most likely in Italy. A 1617 signature of an Italian church censor, Giovanni Domenico Carretto is proof that the manuscript actually was in Italy at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Nothing further is known of the haggadah's history until 1928, when it was in the possession of Dr. Ludwig Pollak, a native of Prague living in Rome. A distinguished humanist and collector of classical art, literary manuscripts, books and Judaica, Dr. Pollak promised the haggadah to his friend Rabbi David Prato, Chief Rabbi of Rome. After disagreements with the Fascist authorities in the late 1930s, Rabbi Prato moved to Palestine. Dr. Pollak, his wife and son, along with other members of the Jewish community of Rome, were deported to Auschwitz, where they perished. After the war, Rabbi Prato was recalled to his previous position in Rome and served the community until his death in 1951. Shortly after the Rabbi's demise, his only son Jeonathan, an Israeli diplomat en route to his post in Buenos Aires, was visited by the sister-in-law of Dr. Pollak in Rome. Knowing of Dr. Pollak's intention to donate the manuscript to the rabbi, she fulfilled the promise and gave the haggadah to the rabbi's only surviving heir. The Prato Haggadah was purchased by the JTS Library in 1964. The art of the Prato Haggadah is witty and imaginative. The manuscript is replete with decorated initial word panels, foliate ornamentation, and hybrid figures. Several illustrations relate directly to the text... The Prato Haggadah contains motifs common in medieval manuscripts, and many folios reflect the artist's sense of humor... For reasons that remain obscure, the manuscript's illumination was never completed. It is precisely the unfinished nature of the codex that allows the viewer to see the stages of production of an illuminated manuscript: the scribal arrangement of the text; the artist's preparatory drawings; the application of gesso to cushion gold or silver leaf; the addition of the leaf; the painting of a wide variety of pigments; and the outlining of the illuminations with ink. The text of the Prato Haggadah is also distinctive. Although it includes the standard biblical, talmudic, and midrashic texts, as well as the liturgical poetry common to other Spanish Haggadot, the Prato Haggadah lacks all elements associated with the Passover meal. Kiddush, blessings for matzah and maror, instructions for the feast itself, and grace after meals are absent. Scholars have suggested that Haggadot of this kind may have been written to be read publicly in the synagogue, after which people would return to their homes for the meal. This phenomenon is found in other Spanish Haggadot and is explained by medieval sources as satisfying the requirement to recount the story of the Exodus for people unable to lead or attend a seder. Many Sephardic Jews immigrated to Italy following the expulsions from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the fifteenth century, often taking their manuscripts with them. Though we do not know when the Prato Haggadah left Spain, the manuscript includes an Ashkenazic liturgical section probably added in northern Italy in the sixteenth century and a censor's signature from Italy dated 1617. In addition, the volume contains many textual emendations and corrections inserted over several centuries. Though the Spanish or Ashkenazic sections of the manuscript cannot be definitively dated or localized, scribal practices and liturgical variants provide a general overview of the history of the manuscript and its owners” (JTS 2010). New condition. (Hag-1-1) (ID #27543) $75.00.

Original Cloth in dustjacket, 4to, xxvi, 134 pages. Illustrates the quilt like nature of the text by color coding Bible, Mishnah, Talmudic passages (etc.) based on when they were added to the Haggadah as we know it today. In his article for volume 77 of the American Jewish Year Book entitled "Jewish Scholarship in the United States: Selections from the Literature, 1973-1975," Menahem Schmelzer highlighted Freedman's Polychrome Haggadah: "Seven colors indicate the seven periods, from biblical to modern, in which the various layers of the Haggadah came into being. Marginal comments on each passage give the source and comprehensive references to scholarly literature. Freedman's new translation and reproductions of many beautiful pages from medieval Haggadah manuscripts make this Haggadah particularly attractive." (1977, pp. 211-212). Goldschmidt was born in Koenigshuette (now Chorzow, Poland), where his father was rabbi. He served from 1926 to 1935 as librarian in the Prussian State Library, Berlin. Immigrating to Palestine in 1936, he joined the staff of the Jewish National and University Library (1936–62). Goldschmidt prepared critical editions of various liturgical texts. His various Passover Haggadot (with German translation, introduction, and notes, 1936, 1937; Hebrew, 1947, 1960) became very popular; the Haggadah by N. N. Glatzer (Eng, 1953, 1969) is based on Goldschmidt's work. In 1959 his edition of Maimonides' prayer text appeared; it was followed by Siddur Tefillat Yisrael (two rites) in 1964; Selihot according to both the Lithuanian and Polish rites in 1965; Kinot (liturgy for the Ninth of Av, Polish rite) in 1968; S. D. Luzzatto's introduction to his edition of the Mahzor Roma was reissued by Goldschmidt (1966) with notes and an essay on the Roman rite. His edition of the High Holiday mahzor (1970), which is a compendium of all the Ashkenazi rites, is of particular importance. ” (EJ, 2007) “Through the generations the Passover Haggadah has been one of the most popular works – perhaps the most popular – in Jewish religious literature. Many recensions, differing from one another to a greater or lesser degree, have been preserved in various manuscripts mostly dating from the 13th to the 15th century, and also in fragments from the Cairo Genizah. These manuscripts originate from all countries in which Jews have lived. Some halakhic works also contain the text of and commentaries on the Haggadah. Others are found in daily or festival prayer books; the majority, however, are separate works for use on the eve of Passover only. These manuscripts have not yet been adequately investigated; only a selected few, particularly the illuminated copies, have engaged the attention of scholars. In the seventh or eighth century the Haggadah was apparently compiled as a separate work by the geonim.” (Ernst Daniel Goldschmidt, ‘Haggadah, Passover’ entry in EJ, 2007). Softcover, 12mo, 63 pages, music, 19 cm. 5th Revised and Enlarged Edition. SUBJECT (S): Haggadot -- Texts. Seder -- Liturgy -- Texts. Other Titles: Haggadah. English & Hebrew. Moses (1847-1926) was a “U. S. Reform rabbi. Moses, who was born in Zaniemysl, Poznan, had not completed his education before he settled in the United States in the early 1870s. He was appointed to rabbinic positions in Quincy, Illinois, Milwaukee, and Chicago. In 1901 he became rabbi of the Central Synagogue, New York, where he remained until his retirement in 1919. In his early days in the United States, Moses was considered a radical Reformer, but later he took a more moderate position. In 1884 he introduced his own prayer book (Tefillat Yisrael). Moses was a founding member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and a member of the Reform committee charged with compiling an official prayer book. The appearance of the Union Prayer Book in 1894 has been credited to his personal initiative in preparing and circulating a manuscript when the committee’s work seemed to be leading nowhere. Moses also published a number of sermons and textbooks for children. His Sabbath School Hymnal, first issued in 1894, ran into 14 editions. While in Milwaukee, he edited the weekly Der Zeitgeist” (Temkin in EJ, 2007). OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (Harvard, Hebrew Union, Nat Lib of Israel). Light wear to binding. Very good condition. 50. HAGADAH SHEL PESAH [PESACH]. Meyes [Metz]: E. Hadamard, 1821. Later marbled boards. 8vo, 32 pages, 22 cm. In Hebrew with Yiddish commentary beneath Hebrew text. This is one of the earliest French haggadot, the first appearing in 1818. The Metz (Northeast France) Jewish community has often been dated as far back as 221. While Jews lived side-by-side with their Christian counterparts, they were frequently targeted for persecution and discrimination. Despite the strict limitations placed on the community, Metz Jews were able to print some of the earliest Franco-Jewish texts, often before Paris. (EJ, 2007) Yaari, 442. OCLC lists 1 copy at Strousbourg. Small hole in title page. Pages are worn but clean. Good condition. A very nice copy. (Hag-18-18) (ID #36673) $375.00.

NOUVELLE EDITION, REVUE. Bordeaux: Lazard-Levy, 1844 [AND] 1843. Original leather boards. 8vo, 62, 446 pages. 16cm. In French and Hebrew. Titles translate to "Haggada: Or Ceremony of the First Two Evenings of Passover, for the Use of French Israelites" and "Prayers of Festivities and Pessach Shavuot for the Usage of Israelities. " These two texts were ostensibly used by French Jews as a guide for Pesach and Shavuot. Though Hebrew is used in section headings, the text and liturgy is completely in French. Translated from the Hebrew by Mardochee (Mordechai) Venture, this work demonstrates the Franco-Jewish connection to French, rather than Hebrew. Venture was a French scholar who was active in the late 18th century. He worked diligently on translating Hebrew texts and chants into Provencal and French for the Jews of southern France. Subjects: Liturgy and ritual. Hagadah. Judaism - Liturgy - Texts. French Jews. OCLC lists only one copy of both texts (National Library of France). Wear to boards, internally very clean. 70. HAGGADAH SHEL PESSAH: IM PITARON BE-LASHON SEFARADI. Livorno, Italy; Bi-Defus Shlomah Bilforti, 1904. Original Publisher’s Cloth with leather spine. 8vo. 84 pages. 24 cm. In Judeo-Arabic and Hebrew. Yaari, 1667 (?). Printed in Livorno, Italy, this Haggadah with Ladino translation following detailed illustrations from woodcuts printed in red ink. Livorno (Leghorn) was an old center of an established Sephardic community in Italy, seconding Venice in Italian Jewish printing houses, with a synagogue considered the finest in Italy. The Jews of Leghorn were known as Gorni (pl. Grana), a “term used for the Jewish immigrants from Leghorn (Livorno), who began to settle in North Africa, especially in Tunisia, from the 17th century on. The Grana were essentially merchants; their commercial activity was strictly connected with the Jews of Livorno. They were 400 or 500 in 1821, their number rose to 2, 500 or 3, 000 in 1893 and to about 5, 000 in 1938. Until the 1940s the Gorni constituted separate congregations in Tunis and in other towns of Tunisia, with their own administration, bet din, and communal institutions. At all times, the Grana considered themselves as belonging to the European culture (besides Arabic, they spoke Spanish, Italian, and French) and felt separate from the ‘Tuansa, ’ i. E. The old Jewish residents of Tunisia. ” (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica) The printing house which issued this Haggadah in 1904 was started by Solomon Belforte (1806–1869), “printer of Leghorn. Belforte belonged to an Italian Jewish family that settled in Leghorn (Livorno) at the end of the 17th century. He started to edit Hebrew prayer books in 1821 and established his own printing house in 1834. In 1843, the local government authorized the printing of Italian translations of Hebrew liturgical texts. The activity of Salomone Belforte & Co. Was continued by the family – with the forced hiatus of the period of Fascist antisemitic laws and the war – until 1961, when all the equipment of the printing house was sold to an Israeli company. For almost 100 years, Salomone Belforte & Co. Was one of the most prestigious publishers of Hebrew books, meeting the intellectual and religious needs of Italian, Sephardi, and also Ashkenazi communities. Beside this, the Belforte printing house published Italian literary works and school books. ” (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica) Subjects: Liturgy and ritual. Hagadah. Judeo-Arabic. 1933. Judaism - Liturgy - Texts. OCLC does not list any copies of this edition. Heavy wear to boards and binding, pencil and pen on inner boards, pages are edgeworn and stained, but perfectly legible. British and American transport planes made some 380 flights from Aden, in a secret operation that was not made public until several months after it was over” (Wikipedia 2014) Etz Hayim was written by Rabbi Yichya ben Yosef Tzala at the end of the eighthteenth or beginning of the nineteenth century. He was considered one of the greatest Yemenite rabbis of his generation. He passed away on the 28th of Nissan in the year 5565 (1805). This commentary was part of a larger work on the Siddur, which was later published in Jerusalem in 1904. Early in his life, Tzala was a proponent of Sephardic minhag and the laws as reflected in Rabbi Joseph Karo’s Shulchan Aruch. During this period Sephardic minhag, customs, began to make headway in Yemenite synagogues. One of the influential leaders of this period, Rabbi Shalom ben Aharon HaKohen Araki (Rashba), was a proponent of the Sephardic tradition. He was a wealthy contributor and leader of the Jewish community of Zana. Rabbi Araki used his wealth to place Sephardic prayer books in synagogues throughout the area. His efforts were vigorously opposed by Rabbi Yehudah Tza’adi, Rabbi Tzala's teacher. Araki threatened sanctions against Tza’adi, but he refused to back down. Rabbi Tzala was deeply influenced by this debate and because of it renewed to his commitment to the ancient Yemenite minhag. Tzala writes about the debate in the introduction to his commentary. According to the Etz Hayim, the debate went on for two years but, in the end, the two sides resolved their differences and promised to treat each other with respect and honor. Tzala maintained his point of view in favor of Yemenite custom, but he described his opponent, the Rashba, as a “light in Israel” and the Rashba, in turn, continued to honor Rabbi Tza'adi. In his commentary Rabbi Tzala analyzes the roots of the various customs and discusses whether or not they are authentic Yemenite practices. Subjects: Haggada shel Pesah. Etz Hayim. 111. Katz, Benzion; Heinrich Loewe; Gershom Kohen. DIE PESSACH HAGGADAH DES GERSCHOM KOHEN, 5287/1527. Berlin; Verlag Josef Altmann, 1926 [1526]. Clothbound. 4to. 14, [76] pages. 32 cm. Fascimile edition of the 1526 book. In Hebrew with accompanying introductory booklet in German. Title, imprint, and series statement from introductory pamphlet (14 pages, laid in). Edited by Benzion Katz and Heinrich Loewe. Reproduction of the Frankfurter Stadtbibliothek copy of the original edition, printed by Gershom ben Solomon, ha-Kohen, in Prague in 1526. “Playing a pivotal role in the development of the illustrated Haggadah was Gershom ben Solomon ha-Kohen's Haggadah, published in Prague in 1526. Typography of this Haggadah, which alternates small and large letters, and contains inverted letters at the end of many lines was a common feature of texts produced by scribes and preserved the look of manuscript Haggadahs. Kohen's Haggadah included sixty woodcut illustrations and played a critical role in establishing the iconographic genres among Haggadahs well into the twentieth century. One example is the four woodcuts on the pages describing the famed "four sons. " Not only are all the sons clothed in Renaissance fashion, but more importantly the "wicked son" is depicted as a traditional soldier of the period. While his uniform would change to fit current fashions, the wicked son appeared for many centuries in the form of a soldier, thus linking wickedness with war for the Jewish people in the early modern and modern periods. In addition, one can see several pages later a pictorial rendition of Pharaoh in a tub, a theme which is present in Haggadahs well into the twentieth century. Drawing on the rabbinic legend that Pharaoh bathed in a tub filled with the blood of Jewish children in order to cure himself of a disease, the Prague Haggadah offers a pictorial tradition which enabled all participants at the seder table to appreciate rabbinic interpretations and tradition. ” (Center for Judaic Studies Penn Libraries Exhibit) Printed in the series “Monumenta Hebraica et Judaica” as book one. Yaari 2020. Subjects: Judaism - Liturgy - Texts. Haggadot - Texts. Seder - Liturgy - Texts. Light wear and light soiling to covers, Spine rebacked. Pages very fresh and clean. Very good condition. Full color hard cover facsimile of the famous illuminated manuscript now in, the National Museum of Sarajevo. The “Sarajevo Haggadah (Sarajevo National Museum) is a 14th-century Spanish illuminated manuscript composed of the traditional three parts: 34 full-page miniatures (fols. 1v–34); illuminated Haggadah text (fols. 1–50); and piyyutim and Torah readings for Passover week (fols. 53–131). It is by far the best-known Hebrew illuminated manuscript, and has been reproduced in part twice during the last 70 years with scholarly introductions by H. Mueller and J. Von Schlosser, and by C. Roth. The full-page miniatures in the Sarajevo Haggadah display the widest range of subjects even among the rich Spanish Haggadot, from the Creation of the World to Moses blessing the Israelites and Joshua before his death, followed by illustrations of the Temple, preparations for Passover, and the interior of a Spanish synagogue. There are few full-page miniatures; most are divided horizontally into two framed sections, with some in four sections. Although the greater part of the iconography of the miniatures is derived from Latin Bible illumination of the Franco-Spanish school, some Jewish elements can be detected, as in the abstention from representation of God or any heavenly beings. Other Jewish aspects can be found in the text illustrations of the Haggadah, such as a miniature of Rabban Gamaliel and his students, and the matzah and maror. Stylistically, the illuminations are related to the Italian-gothic school prevailing in Catalonia in the 14th century. That the Sarajevo Haggadah originates from the Kingdom of Aragon can be inferred from three coats of arms displayed in the manuscript. The Haggadah reached the Sarajevo Museum when in 1894 a child of the city's Sephardi Jewish community brought it to school to be sold, after his father had died leaving the family destitute. ” - EJ 2008. Green cloth hardcover with bright gilt decoration. Decorated frontispiece with 20 full color drawings by Leonard Baskin On title page: “The Passover Haggadah. Drawings by Leonard Baskin. ” The New Union Haggadah edited by Herbert Bronstein for the Central Conference of American Rabbis. Egalitarian Haggadah text in Hebrew and English with transliterations; with full color drawings by noted American graphic artist Leonard Baskin. 34 songs with music and transliterated Hebrew. Leonard Baskin (1922–2000), “U. S. Sculptor, printmaker, watercolorist, and illustrator. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Baskin was the son of a leading Orthodox rabbi. His earliest education was at a yeshivah in Brooklyn, where his family had moved when he was seven. After developing an interest in sculpture at age 14, he would attend day classes at the yeshivah and take evening art classes at the Educational Alliance (1937–39). Baskin also attended New York University (1939–41) and Yale University (1941–43). While at Yale, Baskin discovered William Blake. Impressed by Blake's role as a poet-artist-bookmaker, Baskin founded the Gehenna Press in 1942 and learned printmaking. The Press has published over 100 books, including Homer's Iliad (1962) and Dante's Divine Comedy (1969). … Many of Baskin's drawings and prints concern Jewish subjects. In 1974 he illustrated A Passover Haggadah, for which he provided watercolors, as well as hand lettering of much of the Hebrew text. Baskin received many important commissions, including a bas relief for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D. C, and a seven-foot-tall bronze figure for a Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. ” (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica) Designed by renowned artist Leonard Baskin, this Passover Haggadah is becoming more scarce in hardcover. It has become a central part of the Passover tradition for many Jewish families. The vibrant paintings, the arrangement of the Seder text for group or responsive readings, the inclusion of the simple musical score for each Passover song, and instructions for special blessings and rituals make this book a perfect introduction to the Passover Seder for children and a family treasure for young and old. In 1959 his edition of Maimonides' prayer text appeared; it was followed by Siddur Tefillat Yisrael (two rites) in 1964; Selichot according to both the Lithuanian and Polish rites in 1965; Kinot (liturgy for the Ninth of Av, Polish rite) in 1968; S. In the seventh or eighth century the Haggadah was apparently compiled as a separate work by the geonim. ” (Ernst Daniel Goldschmidt, ‘Haggadah, Passover’ entry in EJ, 2007). Hebrew title romanized. “Ha-tsiyurim ma’aseh yede Sha’ul Raskin” on title page verso. Imprint from title page verso. Color printing; title page in green and purple. Other Titles: Haggadah. English & Hebrew. Raskin (1878-1966) was an “illustrator, painter, printmaker, critic. Born in Nogaisk, Russia, Raskin studied lithography in Odessa, and attended art academies in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy. In 1904, he emigrated to the U. S. He worked in many media and garnered a reputation for his draftsmanlike attention to detail and his realistic approach. His imagery depicted scenes of Jewish life, especially that of New York’s Lower East Side. His trips to Palestine yielded many representations of that country’s Jewish population, among them twenty lithographs of Jerusalem. Raskin also illustrated many Hebrew texts, including Pirke Aboth, the Haggadah, Psalms, the Siddur, Kabbalah in Word and Image, and other works with Jewish content, such as Hebrew Rhapsody. Pirke Aboth demonstrates Raskin’s wonderful sense of design; he makes dramatic use of blank space as a component of his compositions as well as underscores the meaning of each of the book’s sections with a powerful combination of human and fantastic forms, each revealing carefully rendered details of expression. Raskin was the art and theater critic for the Yiddish weekly magazine Does Neie Land. In 1911, Raskin’s “The Future of Jewish Art, ” appeared in the magazine. In the article, Raskin bemoans the inability to find common Jewish attributes in the works of such artists as Antokolsky, Israels, Liebermann, and Pissarro. Raskin postulated that a Jewish Art (sic) might emerge through the identification of common themes and subjects in the work of his contemporaries, specifically in genre and history paintings, rather than through an examination of the widely varied techniques, forms, and styles used by artists of Jewish heritage. Raskin’s work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy. His work has been collected by many major museums and galleries, including the Brooklyn Museum” (Buchwald in EJ, 2007). Very Good Condition in Very Good- Jacket. A Very Nice Copy. Teitelbaum founded and ran Camp S’dei Chemed International summer camp in Israel. Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum, an ultra-Orthodox educator and innovator, wrote this Haggadah after years of discussions with his students: “One must realize that many of their questions can probably be found in the Meforshim, and a variety of answers can be found in all four different parts of Torah, be it p’shat, remez, drush and sod. Brooklyn; Mesorah Publications, 1998/ 1999. Hardbound. 8vo. 303; 309 pages. 24 cm. Two volumes; first edition [Volume 1: "The Grossman edition"; volume 2: "The Ray edition"; not included is volume 3: "The Weinstock edition. " Each stands on its own]. Text in Hebrew and English on opposite pages, commentary in English. Haggadah of the roshei yeshivah, adapted by Yaakov Blinder, from the Hebrew by Asher Bergman, in association with Shalom Meir wallach. Description from the publisher: “Their very names inspire awe: Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer of Slutzk and Jerusalem; Rabbi Aharon Kotler of Kletzk and Lakewood; Rabbi Chaim Shmulevitz of Mir and Jerusalem; Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, the Steipler Gaon of Bnai Brak; Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky of Torah Vodaath; and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein of Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem! Another year, another Haggadah. One often wonders what is left to say -- but no one will ask that question about this monumental anthology. For the first time in English, this volume brings together the ideas and expositions of six of the greatest luminaries of contemporary times, six revered and renowned roshei yeshivah, who, collectively, were the teachers and leaders of tens, even hundreds of thousands of Jews, all over the world. First in ‘Arzei HaLevanon, ’ the Hebrew predecessor of this volume, and now here, their discourses on the Haggadah are collected and set forth with taste and clarity. All of them were Torah geniuses, who saw lessons for today in the miracles of yesterday. To them, the Haggadah and the story of the Exodus were guideposts for life in every era. Their interpretations of the Haggadah are distinguished for depth, incisiveness, pure faith -- and the profound depth that marked their authors as the Torah leaders of three generations. ” With dustjacket. 168. Khvol’son, D. A. (Daniil Avraamovich). DAS LETZTE PASSAMAHL CHRIST UND DER TAG SEINES TODES, NACH DEN IN ÜBEREINSTIMMUNG GEBRACHTEN BERICHTEN DER SYNOPTIKER UND DES EVANGELIUM JOHANNIS. Leipzig; H. Haessel, 1908. Paper wrappers. Folio. XI, 190 pages. 34 cm. Second edition. In German, with Hebrew, Greek, Arabic. Title translates as: “The last Passover meal of Christ and the day of his death, according to the report of the Synoptics put into accordance with the Gospel of John. ” Anastatic reprint of the edition of 1892, with three supplements, containing additions and improvements of the author. D. A. Chwolson (Daniel Avraamovich Khvolson, 1819–1911) was a Russian Orientalist. “Chwolson was born of poor, devout Jewish parents in Vilna. In 1841 he went to Breslau, where Abraham *Geiger befriended him and helped him prepare for matriculation at the university. Later he returned to Russia, settling in St. Petersburg. In 1855 Chwolson became a convert of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was then appointed professor of Hebrew, Syriac, and Chaldaic philology at the University of St. Petersburg, and three years later he was given the corresponding chair at both the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic theological academies in the same city. In this triple capacity he taught practically every eminent Semitic scholar in Russia during the second half of the 19th century and after. Among his disciples were the greatest Russian Orientalists. Despite his conversion, Chwolson remained well disposed toward Jews and Judaism and retained his friendship with many eminent Jewish scholars and leaders. He was particularly welcome in Jewish Orthodox circles because of his frequent intervention on their behalf when government officials threatened the yeshivot or the publication of the Talmud. “Das letzte Passahmahl Christi und der Tag seines Todes” (1892), while meant as an answer to antisemitic accusations, is a learned and detailed investigation of the circumstances of Jesus' trial and condemnation. In it Chwolson attempted to prove that Jesus was sentenced to death by the Sadducean high court and that therefore the Pharisees and masses of Jews bear no guilt. ” (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica). “The deep-rooted belief that Jesus was crucified by the Jews being the principal cause of the prejudice against them on the part of the Christians, Chwolson, in a dissertation entitled "Poslyedniyaya Paskhalnaya Vecherya Isusa Christa I Den yevo Smerti, " in "Christianskoe Chtenie, " St. Petersburg, 1875 (German translation, "Das Letzte Passamal Christi, " ib. 1892), shows the groundlessness of this belief. He points out that the proceedings of the trial and condemnation of Jesus, as related in the Gospels, were in violation of the rabbinical laws, and consequently could not have been conducted by a Jewish tribunal. ” (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia). Subjects: Last Supper. Jesus Christ - Crucifixion. Jesus Christ - Chronology. Bible. N. T. Gospels - Criticism, interpretation, etc. Bible. N. T. Gospels - Chronology.
