He studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau, but did not become a rabbi. Instead, he took up philosophy, continuing his studies at the universities in Breslau, Berlin, and Halle. Originally invited to teacher there by F. A. Lange in 1873, Cohen taught at the University of Marburg until 1912.
