(FT) 8vo. 129 pages. In Hebrew. English title: Songs of the 613 Commandments. SUBJECT(S) : Commandments, Six hundred and thirteen. Eybeschuetz (1690 or 95-1764) was one of the foremost Talmud scholars in Prague. He moved there in 1715, and preached and ran a yeshivah. He engaged other religious scholars, both Jewish and not, in endless debates and intellectual contests, and was on friendly terms with the Cardinal. Well liked by the Jews of Prague, Eybeschuetz was a dayyan in that city, and was rabbi first of Metz and then of the "Three Communities" (Altona, Hamburg and Wandsbek) . His tenure as a leader was not without trouble; the Shabbateans caused him no end of difficulty. Even after appeals to the king and a re-election as rabbi, Eybeschuetz could not quell his attackers, and eventually his yeshivah was closed. Despite all this, he wrote prolifically, and even today his works, with their clear and concise logic, are considered an important part of Talmudic scholarship. (Scholem, EJ) Very good condition. (RAB-24-26).
