Assaf (1889-1953) , an historian, was ordained a rabbi in 1910, and served in that capacity in Luban and Minsk, and taught at Chaim Tchernowitz's yeshiva in Odessa. In 1921 he moved to Jerusalem, and taught at the Hebrew University from its inception in 1925, becoming a full professor in 1936. Though not a lawyer, he was made a member of the Supreme Court after Israel was established. H a-`Onshin Ahare Hatimat ha-Talmud ("Penalties after the Redaction of the Talmud") is an example of his excellent grasp of law despite a lack of formal legal training.
