Marcus (1896-1996) graduated from the University of Cincinnati, Hebrew Union College, where he also taught, and the University of Berlin. In the 1940s, he was instrumental in establishing American Jewish history as an academic discipline, founding the American Jewish Archives at Hebrew Union College and the American Jewish Periodical Center.
