On July 10, 1920 he and Bernard Cantor (1892-1920), a U.S. Reform rabbi, were murdered by Soviet troops in Kiev, Ukraine while volunteers on a Joint Distribution Committee relief programs for Jewish victims of post-World War I antisemitism in Eastern Europe.
