The author Johannes Hempel (1891-1964) was a prominent protestant theologican and professor of biblical literature in the Weimar era; he joined the Nazis in 1933 and was a member of the Institute for Research and elimination of Jewish influence on German church life (Institut zur Erforschung und Beseitigung des jüdischen Einflusses auf das deutsche kirchliche Leben) , and served as a war chaplain on the eastern front. He served as a Lutheran pastor after the war, and resumed as a professor in 1955 at Gottingen. With the bookplate and signature (dated 1949, Berlin) of Steven S Schwarszchild (1924-1989) , born in Frankfurt, his family escaped from Nazi Germany in 1939; “After receiving ordination from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati in 1948, Steven Schwarzschild moved to Berlin to serve as a rabbi for the Judische Gemeinde zu Berlin.
