Yiddish translation of Bednye liudi (Poor Folk) , the first novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, written over the span of nine months between 1844 and 1845. Contemporary critics lauded Poor Folk for its humanitarian themes, Belinsky named it Russia's first 'social novel'. Alexander Herzen praised the book in his essay 'About the Progress of Revolutionary Ideas in Russia', noting the book's 'socialistic tendencies and animations. ' Translated by Ts.
