Includes "Passover" by Mordecai Kaplan; "Mother Zion, " by Israel Zangwill; and other essays and songs. Kaplan (1881-1983) , born in Lithuania, was a founder of the Reconstructionist movement in the United States. His family moved to the U. S. When he was nine, and he was later ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary and was a rabbi in New York. In 1909 Kaplan began working at the Seminary, under Solomon Schechter, first as a dean and soon after began a half-century long teaching career. His Reconstructionist views "[meant] that Judaism should be considered from a pragmatic, historical point of view, rather than a metaphysical, revelational one[, that t]he focus of the content of Jewish life is the Jewish people, its needs, and its responses to challenge, rather than revealed texts or metaphysical constructions....Tradition can guide but must not dictate.
