Original gilt-stamped cloth, 8vo, xlvi, 521 pages. 2 plates, engraved title page. All Edges Gilt. 19.3 x 12.5 cm. The front board indicates that this was a presentation copy from J. W. Forney to E. B. Hart. Forney was John Weiss Forney, the Clerk of the House of Representatives from 1851 to 1856, and then 1860-1861. Hart was Emanuel B. Hart, Representative from New York State from 1851 to 1853. Given the date of this book (1854 on the title page, 1853 on the engraved title page), this was likely presented to Hart after his leaving the House as a memento for his service. Hart was the second Jewish member of the United States House of Representatives, and the first from New York State. Who was”elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress (1851-1853). He was later appointed by President James Buchanan to serve as surveyor of the Port of New York from 1857 to 1861. He also served as member of the city board of assessors. He served as president of Mount Sinai Hospital from 1870 to 1876 and New York City's commissioner of immigration from 1870 to 1873. He also worked as treasurer of the Society for the Relief of Poor Hebrews. He was a presidential elector in 1868 (Wikipedia).The text contains the Constitution, resolutions from each state ratifying it, and other charts and documents related to the history of Congress. OCLC 3667303. Boards are bumped at corners, with some chipping to edges of spine, but the binding remains attractive and the inside pages and binding are bright and strong.
