1st edition. Later boards, small 12mo, [10] + 100 pages. 15 cm. In German. 10-word inscription from the author in English on the half-title. Title translates as, “Thoughts on Religious Customs and Beliefs. Parsism and the Biblical Religions. A contribution to the cultural history of the East and West.” Singerman 3643 Much especially on the custom of covering the head during religious worship. Maurice Fluegel (1832-1911) was a “rabbi and doctor….He was the author of a wide range of books and articles covering Jewish theological and philosophical topics. Educated at the Universities of Leipzig and Paris, he additionally received degrees in economics, history and languages in 1862 in Bucharest, and his theological diploma from Chief Rabbi Lazard Isidor in Paris in 1869. He was the rabbi of several congregations in the United States, including Congregation Shaarei Shomayim (now the Springhill Avenue Temple) of Mobile, Alabama from 1867 to 1869, the Hebrew Reform Temple (Kehilat Kodesh B'nai Sholem, now Temple B'nai Shalom) of Quincy, Illinois, from at least 1870 to 1871, Temple Anshe Emeth of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, 1872 to 1876, Congregation Anshe Chesed (now Temple Anshe Hesed) of Erie, Pennsylvania from 1876 to c. 1879, and Temple B'nai Israel in Kalamazoo, Michigan from 1880 to at least May 1881. According to Encyclopedia Judaica, Rabbi Fluegel's last pulpit was at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation from 1881 to 1884, however, based on his papers, it appears he may have also had a pulpit in Paducah, Kentucky from 1886-1888” (Jewish Museum of MD).
