First edition. Original paper wrappers, 8vo, 29 pages includes illustrations. 23 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates as “YIVO: Its Objectives and Activities.”
An overview of the activities of the Argentina chapter of YIVO in the year 1932.
“In Argentina, a group of activists organized in 1926 a support committee [for YIVO], and in 1928 the Argentine Section was formally established, which together with the United States uninterruptedly sustained its work until today. In its almost a hundred years, the Buenos Aires subsidiary became a reference for Jewish culture in Latin America. From there, the IWO kept the Yiddish language alive through courses, cultural activities, book editing, library, historical archive and research projects.
The IWO [i.e. YIVO] century of existence was marked by great tragedies. Vilnius' headquarters were destroyed during World War II; [the] heritage was looted by the Nazis, protected by their workers within the Vilnius Ghetto and partially recovered after the Holocaust. Decades later, the headquarters of the IWO [YIVO] in Buenos Aires suffered the attack on the AMIA in 1994, which completely destroyed the building where it operated. Thanks to the tireless task of more than 800 volunteers, a substantial part of [the] documentary collection was rescued” (IWO).
