“In 1862, the Israelite Congregation of Buenos Aires (later renamed with the current denomination: ‘of the Argentine Republic’), the first institution of the Jewish community in Argentina was created. For years the Jewish community residing in Buenos Aires, met in a private house to celebrate their religious traditions until in 1871, the Government of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento authorized for the first time, the practice of the Jewish Rabinate in the country, and Rabbi Henry Joseph was the first spiritual authority.
From 1879, he devoted himself to charity as well as to the registration of births, marriages and deaths of the community. This same year, he began raising funds for the acquisition of a plot in order to establish a cemetery that would allow Jews to be buried according to their ritual. In 1891 the first Jewish school and the Latin Israelite Congregation of Buenos Aires, which brought together Moroccan Jews, were also founded.
In 1889, with the contribution of Baron Hirsch, the congregation bought a plot of land in Buenos Aires on Libertad Street, in order to build a synagogue. On September 27, 1897 they placed in front of where the so-called Miró Palace (present-day Plaza Lavalle) was located, the foundation stone of what would be the first synagogue in the city, a ceremony attended by the Municipal Mayor, Francisco Alcobendas. Due to the remarkable growth of the Jewish community the building built there was completely modified in 1932 acquiring its current features.” (Wikipedia)
