Well-documented study of the varied Jewish communal organizations of self-governance in Palestine in the early twentieth century.
The work explores how the Jewish community (Yishuv) built domestic political organs, local town councils, and educational systems. Burstein also analyzes the framework of the elected Assembly and the National Council (Vaad Leumi), which managed communal affairs, taxation, health, and welfare.
He also documents the shift of administrative responsibilities, such as schooling and public health, from the Zionist Organization to localized Jewish governing bodies during the British Mandate.
